The Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Protection Peak (QATSICPP) is the peak body for youth justice in Queensland. As the peak we work with government and key partners to create safer communities and change the life trajectory of young people who interact with the criminal justice system.

We actively represent, advocate, and support Queensland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child protection and family support sector through our strong membership and work with stakeholders.

By sharing our collective knowledge and experience, we can all make a positive impact on policies and practices to stop the overrepresentation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in Queensland’s child protection and youth justice systems.

About the role

The Youth Justice Research Assistant position involves undertaking research and data analysis on critical issues within the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child and family sector and providing strategic advice under the guidance of the Executive Director for the Centre of Excellence.

The role also entails contributing knowledge sharing, creation, translation and practice wisdom to positively influence policies and practices addressing the over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people in the Queensland Youth Justice system.

Typical Duties and responsibilities:

  • Build strong, effective, and engaging relationships with key stakeholders including QATSICPP staff, member organisations, research institutes and the Department of Youth Justice.
  • Conduct field work and desktop research that contributes to the objectives of the Youth Justice peak.
  • Conduct analysis of current research gaps and identify new research project that will create the right evidence.
  • Undertaking literature reviews of national and international advances in youth justice programs that reduce recidivism and in particular support First Nations people.
  • Analysis of critical issues and formulate strategic advice.
  • Participate in forums, policy, and legislative process.
  • Publication of research reports
  • Collect case studies to highlight the practice wisdom of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations in the area of Youth Justice.
  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • Other tasks as directed by the CoE Director and/or the CEO.

Desired skills, experience, and capabilities:

  • Significant knowledge and understanding of system and practice issues impacting on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families within the context of child protection and youth justice.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the policy context for system reform and its impact on youth justice reform for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled sector.
  • Capacity to use NVIVO software or attain this.

Mandatory requirements:

  • Experience in the research processes within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child and family agencies, or relevant experience in a related field such as health, mental health, or community development.
  • High level qualitative and quantitative research and data analysis
  • Possession of a degree and/or post graduate studies in related content is highly desirable.
  • A current valid Queensland Working with Children’s Card (Blue Card) or eligible to apply
  • Drivers Licence
