With more than 6.2 million students in California K-12 public schools and over 20% of Los Angeles County’s 10 million residents under the age of 18, young people have held and will continue to hold a critical role in combating climate change and environmental injustice. TreePeople is determined to engage, empower and support millions of young people to take action to build healthy and equitable communities.

TreePeople is seeking an energetic, environment passionate Youth Leadership Coordinator familiar with Los Angeles County, specifically in the south and central region, to join our team. This program focuses on inspiring, engaging, training and supporting students in grades 6 – 12 to become leaders in their communities and agents for climate resilience and change. The ideal candidate must be a community-oriented individual who is adept at mobilizing and prioritizing the needs of students and teachers and have a strong commitment to improving the environment through education. This position will work closely with teachers and student groups in classes, on-campus environmental (eco) clubs, after school groups, community groups and with young people who are leaders in their communities or schools. In addition, this position is responsible for implementing current and future requirements for multiple funding sources.

Generation Earth (GE) is the largest Secondary Student Environmental Education Program in the county, Generation Earth (GE) is TreePeople’s Environmental Service Learning program that catalyzes student environmental improvement projects in schools in collaboration with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works. For over 25 years, TreePeople has implemented the GE program, serving approximately 15,000 middle and high school students across Los Angeles County annually.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Recruit, engage and support students around Los Angeles to participate in Environmental Education Curriculum in and out of the classroom: to promote sustainability in their schools and communities through the Generation Earth contract.
  • Provide resources and tools to teachers across Los Angeles County to empower students to become environmental stewards.
  • Develop, implement and lead 3 teacher workshops and support 6 additional workshops per year.
  • Assist in development and implementation of large-scale events such as the Youth Summit and Summer Institute.
  • Assist individual youth leaders to connect with GE and TreePeople opportunities and take on leadership roles in improving the environment and addressing climate change and eco-anxiety in their community.
  • Support and facilitate the creation of GE EcoClubs in schools, including guiding the election and project selection processes. Maintain eco-clubs through on-going support.
  • Support student project management, including guiding them through completing administrative and logistical tasks necessary for project completion.
  • Maintain Youth Leadership programs operations through various administrative and creative tasks.
  • Assist in administering evaluation instruments and collecting assessment data.
  • Track and report on projects and program data on a daily, weekly and monthly basis in SalesForce with timely and accurate input.
  • Write and produce high-caliber and professional memorandums, correspondence and reports.
  • Initiate, coordinate and implement a minimum of 10 presentations, service learning projects and/or field trips per month.
  • Create new content for in-class presentations and service learning projects on waste, water and forestry topics.
  • Represent TreePeople in the community.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain annual professional development goals.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Experience in working with schools and children (12-18 years of age) on environmental projects.
  • Experience in planning and executing environmental education service-learning projects with school groups in and out of the classroom.
  • Familiarity with and ability to drive to and from the Central and South Central region of Los Angeles County.
  • Knowledge of environmental, equity and education issues especially urban water and/or green-infrastructure issues in Los Angeles County and engaging local communities.
  • Understanding of ecological systems and awareness of current environmental issues, including impacts of urban development and green solutions.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Solid presentation skills, including experience presenting at workshops, community and agency meetings.
  • Able to perform physical work on a regular basis that includes but is not limited to loading planting tools on trucks, using planting tools lift up to 15 pounds trees as needed.
  • Highly organized, detailed oriented, strong work ethic, friendly, smart, proactive and a quick learner.
  • Works independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to remain flexible and adapt to multiple processes prone to change.
  • Ability to visit school sites across the Los Angeles Area on a regular basis.
  • Valid CA Driver’s License, proof of insurance and reliable transportation a must.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) verbal and written strongly preferred.
  • Highest ethical standards for complying with all contractual and legal obligations, both as an individual and as a manager leading a team, to uphold TreePeople’s good faith and community commitment.
  • Experience with intermediate to expert knowledge of Microsoft, SalesForce and Google Suites tools and applications, preferred.

SALARY DESCRIPTION:

$22.00 – $25.00 per hour
