Mission and objectives

UNDP is the UN’s global development network, an organization advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. UNDP is on the ground in about 170 countries and territories, working with national counterparts on solutions to global and national development challenges, and achieve sustainable development by eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions, accelerating structural transformations for sustainable development and building resilience to crises and shock. In addition, UNDP now has the mandate to support SDG Integration to ensure faster progress on sustainable development and offers support in the following four areas, (1) integrated policy and programming solutions, (2) SDG metrics, data and analysis using state-of-the-art tools for modelling and forecasting, (3) knowledge and innovation and (4) SDG Financing options to help countries identify innovative ways to expand public and private contributions to reach the 2030 agenda. UNDP Egypt supports governmental institutions with social inclusion, inclusive growth and entrepreneurship, green transition and governance, in partnership with the United Nations system, development partners and other partners. UNDP Egypt works across the country with stakeholders, including governments, civil society, private sector and the youth, to create an enabling environment for youth in to unleash their creativity and leadership in civic, economic and political spheres.

Context

The UN Volunteer will be involved in the daily work of the Inclusive Growth & Innovation team preparing background briefs, research and analysis and support the preparation and drafting of documents that will support the advancement of the Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) agenda in Egypt.

Task description

Under the direct supervision of Inclusive Growth & Innovation Team Leader, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: i) Policy and strategy development: • Prepare policy briefs, sector scan, status papers on development challenges based on desk review studies and analysis for evidence-based advocacy and policy development in the field of Youth, Peace and Security. • Participate in the development of new or ongoing initiatives, including support reviewing of policy literature to enhance UNDP programming in the field of YPS agenda. • Help in documenting good practices, cases studies, innovations and pilot models for wider dissemination and sharing. • Research and mapping of relevant stakeholders, including national and local authorities, civil society organizations, youth groups, UN agencies, donors and other actors involved in the YPS agenda. ii) Project Design, formulation and other project related functions: • Support the team to advance youth capacities in participation in public life and public poli-cy design to explore and promote innovative tools and frameworks for in targeting a youth perspective in policy formulation and service design. • Conduct research and analysis on the situation and needs of youth in target countries with a focus on their role and contribution to peace and security. • Assist in Youth, Peace and Security and youth civic engagement program development within UNDP in Egypt and target countries as stipulated in the project document feeding into global policy development. • Support UNDP engagement on youth with the goal of identifying gaps and strengths and finding entry points to support advancing and mainstreaming the YPS agenda, including liaising and coordinating with the other UN agencies and partners. Participate in preparing conceptual framework and concept notes on new areas of work or development challenges relating to Youth, Peace and Security. • Assist in the development of technical support of new or existing interventions or projects. • Provide technical and operational support to the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the YPS project activities, in line with the project document, work plan and budget • Monitor and report on the risks and challenges affecting the YPS project, and support the proposal of mitigation measures and solutions • Help in preparing and reviewing project documents. • Perform other duties assigned by the supervisor as the need arises. iii) Knowledge Management: • Assist in preparing knowledge and communication products related to Youth, Peace and Security and youth projects and programs. • Participate in reviewing knowledge products (subject, design and content). • Support dissemination of knowledge and communications products.

This assignment is funded by the Government of Finland and therefore specific criteria apply. ELIGIBILITY – Candidates must be Finnish nationals and must have knowledge of Finnish or Swedish. – Candidates must be between 18 and 29 years of age at the time of application (the above age range does not apply) – Candidates who already served on a UN Youth Volunteer assignment funded by the Government of Finland are not eligible. Required experience

1 years of experience in or demonstrated interest in Youth, prevention of radicalization (unscr 2250 ), conflict prevention and peacebuilding, YPS or other relevant programmes. Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded. • Report-writing with the ability to present recommendations supported by findings gathered through desk review; accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing; • Organizational skills and analytical, research, data gathering, writing and communication skills; • Knowledge or work experience in the Middle East and North Africa is desirable; • Strong commitment to working for sustainable development, peacebuilding and human rights, and advancing the Youth, Peace and Security agenda; • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills; • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development; • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel; • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment; • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines; • Sound security awareness.

Egypt is a family duty station. Cairo is the capital of Egypt and the largest city in the Middle-East and second-largest in Africa. The city has long been a centre of the region’s political and cultural life. Today it is a teeming, vibrant national capital with one of the world’s highest population density per square mile. While the city struggles with the social and environmental effects of overcrowding, it dominates Egypt politically, economically, and culturally and remains a prime tourist destination. Climate: Egypt essentially has a hot desert climate. The climate is generally extremely dry all over the country except on the northern Mediterranean coast which receives more rainfall in winter. Average low temperature vary from 9.5 °C (49.1 °F) during wintertime to 23 °C (73.4 °F) to summertime and averages high temperatures vary from 17 °C (62.6 °F) during wintertime to 32 °C (89.6 °F) in summertime. Airport: Cairo International Airport, an important connecting point between Europe, Asia, and Africa, offers regular service by most major airlines. EgyptAir offers both domestic flights to Luxor, Aswan, and Hurghada and international service. There are a wide range of international schools.
