About the role

The Queer Youth Services team delivers responsive, intentional, and evidence-based programs. Our activities are delivered within a public health framework, focusing on prevention and early intervention. These efforts strive to build and enhance the innate resilience of queer young people, their families and communities and to increase protective factors present in their communities. Our programs are open to LGBTIQA+ and QTIPOC young people. Our service prioritises and seeks to assertively engage First Nations young people, young people of colour, public housing residents, and international students identifying as LGBTIQA+.

The Peer Leader positions create youth participation, leadership, and employment opportunities. The Peer Leaders are responsible for co-delivering activities and programs for young people. This includes preparing for activities, debriefing, facilitating programs/activities, administration duties, promoting positive engagement and positive role modelling.

Your Responsibilities

  • Collaborating with young people, including other Youth Peer Leaders & Youth Development Practitioners to ensure co-design and community development opportunities are available at the local and municipal level
  • Positively and proactively participate in the delivery of youth programs and activities that assertively engage smaller populations of LGBTIQA+ young people at the local level, including those who are considered socially marginalised or resource poor to lessen the impact of social exclusion
  • Actively contribute to the Queer Youth Services team’s activities across the public health spectrum, including in health promotion, early intervention, and prevention activities
  • Identify and build pathways into tertiary services and programs and activities that support recovery and connection for young people

Selection Criteria

  • A young person (aged 18 to 30)
  • A genuine interest and commitment to working with First Nations young people, young people of colour, public housing residents, and international students identifying as LGBTIQA+.
  • Lived experience of belonging to the LGBTIQA+ community.
  • Lived experience of belonging to one or more communities’ DS seek to assertively engage and/or strong connections with the communities the Queer Youth Services team assertively engages.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan programs, events, or activities with children and/or young people.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver activities and facilitate discussions with groups of young people.
  • Awareness of issues faced by young people the service engages.
  • Involved and actively participating in their local community
