Job Overview: The vision of the IRC Seattle Youth Program is that youth from refugee and immigrant backgrounds will have the skills and resources necessary to pursue a future of opportunity. The Youth Program works towards this vision by providing educational and enrichment opportunities to help school-aged youth from refugee and immigrant backgrounds catch up on their education, accelerate English Language Learning, plan and prepare for post-secondary education and/or career, and build positive relationships in the school and community. The Senior Youth Program Coordinator for Secondary Programs is responsible for leadership, oversight, and implementation of secondary programs including in-class support, after-school programs, Youth Futures Summer Internships, and wrap-around supports and referrals. This will include program design and planning, curriculum development, supervision and direction for staff, Washington Service Corps members, interns, and volunteers, direct instruction, program registration, and coordination with teachers and families. Under the supervision of the Senior Program Manager for Youth & Education, this position ensures that goals and program objectives are accomplished in tandem with IRC staff, local school districts, youth, families, community partners, and volunteers.

Major Responsibilities:

Program Design and Planning

  • Supervise the design, plan, and implementation of culturally responsive and developmentally appropriate programs to support newcomer Middle & High School students’ targeted growth in English language development, social and emotional development, and positive cultural identity through academic enrichment and support activities.
  • Regularly plan, coordinate and communicate with teachers, administration, Senior Program Manager for Youth & Education, and Youth Program Staff in order to ensure programming is effective and coordinated, meeting the needs of youth, families, and schools, and meeting funder requirements.
  • Research and develop new and innovative youth development programs to meet the identified needs of newcomer youth and families that promote Healing Classrooms, anti-racism, strengths-based approaches, and elevate youth voice and leadership.
  • Research and build knowledge of available services and programs offered within IRC, schools, districts, partner agencies, early learning programs, and social service providers, in order to make referrals and connect youth and families to additional programs and services as needed.

Supervision and Leadership

  • Provide leadership and oversight for IRC Seattle’s Middle School & High School Programs.
  • Supervise and support program staff, Washington Service Corps members, interns and volunteers working in IRC WA’s
  • Provide leadership on the broader Education and Learning team as well as supervision and coordination of team
  • Ensure implementation of People Manager Standards and consistently support staff with growth and wellbeing

  • Following IRC’s People Management Standards, conduct regular 1:1 check-ins, set goals and expectations, and
  • provide timely feedback to direct reports.
  • Monitor staff and programs to ensure safeguarding and program guidelines are being followed; conduct and
  • document quarterly caregiver/youth check-ins and bi-monthly observations of individual virtual tutoring sessions.
  • Provide timely feedback to educators to improve instructional practices and alert the Youth and Education
    Program Manager to any policy violations or Safeguarding concerns
  • Report on grant deliverables, including progress toward program outcomes, enrollment numbers, and verifications, and narratives regarding both transformative aspects and challenges within the programs.
  • 4+ years related professional experience with older youth and newcomer youth, and such as teaching, tutoring, youth development or youth case management.
  • Lived experience as a refugee or immigrant or related lived experience preferred.
  • In lieu of lived experience, experience working with youth/individuals from refugee or immigrant backgrounds, cross-cultural experience accepted.
  • Committed to anti-racism and continual learning and growth.
  • Experience teaching Multilingual Language Learners; TESOL certificate desirable.
  • Experience overseeing and supporting classroom teachers, assistants and/or volunteers with willingness to grow and develop skills for staff supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to use a variety of instructional strategies appropriate for individual student needs.
  • Strong ability to plan and lead youth programs with a good presence in front of the classroom; able to provide direct large group or individual instruction, and positive classroom management.
  • Flexible and adaptable – able to quickly problem solve and change plans and activities according to student need or unexpected circumstances.
  • Understanding of social-emotional learning, growth mindset, and trauma-informed practices preferred.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to work well with people of diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to maintain responsibility for multiple tasks in the context of a diverse, fast-paced work environment.

Program Implementation

  • Oversee Specialists’ processes for student recruitment and identification, processes and systems for enrollment and eligibility verification, conducting enrollment calls or home visits, and collecting parent permission slips and program documentation.
  • Lead the implementation of culturally responsive programming that promotes positive cultural identity, celebration of diversity, and is continually working towards anti-racism in education.
  • Utilize a trauma-informed pedagogy to create Healing Classrooms and build supportive relationships with refugee youth to maximize students’ academic success and long-term personal and professional goals.
  • Conduct regular family outreach and engagement to gain client voice, input and feedback in program design, student enrollment and participation, and to support families’ connection and navigation of school and education systems.
  • Collaborate with other Coordinators and Senior Program Manager to lead District Kick-Off events to establish relationships with families and introduce IRC programs.
  • Track budget for programs by district, managing expense needs throughout the year, including mileage reimbursements, field trip costs, and supplies as needed.

  • Develop and improve systems and tools for program evaluation including quantitative and qualitative measures, student and family feedback and input.

  • Participate in all program meetings, staff development activities, and fully engage as a member of the IRC team.
  • Comply with all policies, procedures, and protocols of the agency.

Job Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree in Education, Human Development, International Studies, Linguistics, Social Work or related field desirable; Masters Degree highly desirable Kinyarwanda, etc.).
  • Willing to be First Aid/CPR certified upon hire.

  • This is a hybrid position with in-person programming required within school districts in South King County and possibly Snohomish County. IRC Office visits, or programming within other community spaces approximately 40% of the work week. Administrative work can be done remotely from home office or IRC office in SeaTac.
  • Access to reliable internet connection required if opting to work remotely from home office.
  • Access to reliable transportation to commute to SeaTac and South King County and Snohomish County schools.
  • The typical work schedule for this position is approximately 8:00 – 4:00, 9:00 – 5:00 or 10:00 – 6:00 Monday – Friday, as needed, with occasional evening and weekend obligations.

Compensation: Posted pay ranges apply to US-based candidates. Ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job type, internal equity, and budget. Exact offers are calibrated by work location, individual candidate experience and skills relative to the defined job requirements.
