The Youth Program Coordinator (YPC) staff position is responsible for supporting all Montana Conservation Corps (MCC) youth program activities from both office and field locations. Primary duties include the daily management of the Expedition program admissions process, providing timely responses to applicants and parents/guardians through phone or email, coordinating logistics, events and trainings with youth program staff during the height of the youth recruitment and leader training season.  This position will split time between administrative and logistical duties during the spring, including opportunities to provide training to Leaders, followed by opportunity for field-based work during the summer expedition program, providing technical guidance as necessary and ensuring compliance with MCC policies and procedures.  The YPC will conduct member check-ins, trainings, evaluations, field support and administrative tasks for youth program leaders (AmeriCorps positions) as directed by the Youth Program Manager.  The YPC is expected to maintain good communication between all youth program staff, other MCC offices, project partners and crews in the field. 

Location: Bozeman and Kalispell, MT

Classification: Seasonal, non-exempt

Wage: $22 per hour

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Overall Program, Administrative Support
  • Support the youth programs’ Leaders, including ongoing training, feedback, and contribution to behavior management strategies or discipline, and periodic written evaluation of leader and member performance
  • Attend and support statewide trainings when requested
  • Conduct regular debriefs with Leaders , ensuring high quality implementation of MCC leadership development programming and curriculum; is familiar with MCC program objectives as well as education and training curriculum
  • Daily management of the branch youth paperwork tracking  and follow up, including ongoing communication with crews, partner organizations, and youth program staff.
  • Maintain tracking systems to monitor and ensure accurate and timely reporting of youth program field visits, evaluations, timesheets, disciplinary records, project paperwork, educational curriculum, crew dynamics and participant wellness
  • Assist with planning and implementation of all program operations as requested

Project Oversight and Technical Support:  

  • Planning and logistical support for the implementation of technical training for all participants
  • Work with partner agencies and organizations to develop Project Information Sheets and coordinate project work to communicate with crews the specific details regarding service activities and project logistics
  • Instill a culture of professionalism and caring, cultivate safety awareness within crews; ensure compliance with MCC policies and safety standards within all crews
  • Visit youth crews in the field to provide guidance, technical/programmatic support, and assistance to Leaders as well as ensure that activities are in compliance with MCC policies/procedures, and that project accomplishments meet project partner expectations
  • Coordinate and organize gear and tool cache inventory systems and usage
  • Manage and maintain vehicle fleet in conjunction with regional Field Coordinators
  • Collect written and photographic documentation of project accomplishments
  • Participate in an emergency On-Call schedule, coordinating response to issues in the field and providing emotional and behavioral support to participants

Minimum Required Education and Experience:

  • At least two years of college or military experience, or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum age of 21
  • Previous leadership experience, skills, or training
  • Previous work experience in a youth development program or in a youth recreation or school setting
  • Effective written and oral communication skills, with strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Proficient  with  Microsoft  Word  and  Excel,  cloud-based  collaborative  systems,  as  well  as  G  Suite  for  businesses
  • Ability to work as a team member
  • Relevant technical skills including trail maintenance and construction, chainsaw use and maintenance, fencing, stream bank restoration, and other natural resource work. Applicant should also possess experience with a wide range of power and hand tools
  • Current Wilderness Advanced First-Aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain
  • A valid driver’s license and ability to be insurable per MCC parameters

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to hike 3-12 miles per day in rugged terrain, often wearing a 45lb backpack and carrying tools
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds repeatedly and use hand and power tools
  • Willingness and ability to work long, hard hours in all weather conditions
  • Ability to be away on overnight camping trips for up to two weeks at a time
