The Recovery Café Network (RCN) is committed to nurturing groups seeking to start recovery communities based on the Recovery Cafe Model. Over the past year, RCN has adapted this model to support healthy development for youth with a youth initiative called “Discovery Cafe.” Phase 1 has involved piloting the model within 4 communities in Indiana, and we are now expanding the program across full-member Recovery Cafes in the US/Canada (Phase 2). The Discovery Café Catalyst Coach will create and manage multiple elements of the Discovery Café program including management & training for our Pilot Cohort (combines Phase 1 and 2); mobilizing national recruitment efforts; and 3) co-create a framework for Phase 3 (development of a Discovery Café Network).

Key roles and responsibilities:

Oversee and Implement Pilot Cohort Training and Support (Combine Pilot Phase 1 & 2): 60%

There are seven Discovery Cafes across the US. They have completed a one-day launch training, with 4 months of subsequent training as defined below.

  • Develop, facilitate, and coordinate post-launch training for cohort pilot of 7 national locations
  • Implement ongoing support and training including:
  • Regular cohort check-ins
  • Regular 1-1 coaching calls
  • Regular trainings on model and other topics
  • Manage online educational resources through Recovery Cafe Network Hub (digital platform)
  • Maintain updated staff contact list for Discovery Cafes
  • Maintain Salesforce (contact management system) notes and updates
  • Run regular AGENCY (Recovery Cafe Network database) reports to ensure Discovery Cafes are effectively implementing the model and tracking outcomes
  • Collaborate as member of the Recovery Cafe Network team

Mobilize National Catalyst/Recruitment Efforts for Discovery Cafes: 15%

In addition to the existing 7 Discovery Cafe locations, this role will help expand the number of Cafes through promoting the model and accompanying communities interested in launching a Discovery Cafe (potential implementers).

  • Attend regional and national conferences related to youth and young adult mental health prevention and recovery
  • Conduct virtual presentations at regional and national coalitions, counsels, government bodies, etc.
  • Connect with and support new potential implementers for Discovery Cafes (1-1 meetings, community organizing preparation, application and business planning support)
  • Develop national strategies for engaging potential implementers at the systems level (education, hospitals, government agencies, faith communities, youth serving orgs)

Co-create Recruitment & Training Framework for Phase 3 (Communities outside of RCN members): 15%

Phase 3 will entail expanding the Discovery Cafe Network beyond current adult Recovery Cafe Implementers. Independent communities outside the Recovery Cafe Network will have the chance to launch a Discovery Cafe.

  • Build upon existing training curricula to develop expanded learning objectives to deepen understanding of the Discovery Cafe Model (draw from adult Recovery Cafe training)
  • Create training presentations for 2-day launch of new Discovery Cafes
  • Create schedule and content for post-launch trainings
  • Develop additional tools and templates for Phase 3
  • Design potential framework for building out a Discovery Cafe Network

Host Discovery Café Site and Immersion Visits: 5%

  • Partner with Catalysts to host potential implementers at Midwest Center
  • Develop process and tools to schedule, plan and host immersion visits for Discovery Cafes

Other Responsibilities: 5%

  • Attend weekly staff meetings and circle/check-in
  • Attend weekly supervision meetings
  • Attend monthly Discovery Cafe Consult (internal meeting focused on support of Discovery Cafes)
  • Partner with Marketing Director to develop content for regular newsletters
  • Liaise with Recovery Cafe Emerging Member Manager (EMM) to ensure streamlined processes for applications, support, training plans and other standard policies and procedures
  • Partner with Director of Recovery Cafe Network to execute a Memorandum of Understandings (MOU) for Discovery Cafes
  • Partner with Director of Recovery Cafe Network to execute any funding opportunities for Discovery Cafe
  • Partner with Recovery Cafe Network leadership team to strategize on long-term growth plan of Discovery Cafes, including potential Discovery Cafe Network

Required Qualifications:

  • 2-3 years direct work with youth (preferably mental health and substance use prevention)
  • 2-3 years of community engagement/outreach
  • 2-3 years of program management and development
  • 1-2 years of entrepreneurial or start-up experience (creation of a new business or new program) – must have the ability to self-start and self-manage.
  • Must have strong interpersonal communications skills.
  • Ability to engage participants in training, presentations and one-on-one conversations.
  • Ability to consistently serve as a motivator, conflict resolver, and “de-escalator” for teams.
  • Ability to work amicably on a diverse staff team with flexibility, creativity, and enthusiasm.
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills (Windows) sufficient to communicate effectively with staff and other agencies using Microsoft Office, and email.
  • Ability to embody principles of mental health, wellness and recovery (self-discovery) in daily interactions.
  • Strong desire to support individuals who are on the recovery journey.
  • If the candidate has a history of substance use and/or mental health challenges, they must have at least one year of continuous recovery.
  • Capacity to be loving and to establish and maintain appropriate boundaries with Café patrons who at times may be very challenging.

Salary Range: $52,000 – $57,000
