The Field Coordinator for Youth Programs (FCYP) staff position is responsible for the field coordination and logistical support of all Montana Conservation Corps (MCC) youth program field-based activities. Primary duties include technical and logistical coordination of MCC project work in the field.  Duties also include direct support and mentoring of youth crew leaders and enrolled youth in the program. Additional activities will include field visitation to help ensure the successful and safe completion of MCC projects, and ensuring compliance with MCC policies and procedures. The FCYP is supervised by the Youth Program Manager and is expected to maintain good communication between all MCC offices, project partners and crews. 

Location: Kalispell or Bozeman, MT

Dates: 5/6/2024 – 8/30/2024

Wages: $22 per hour

Status: Seasonal, non-exempt

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Project Oversight and Technical Support:  

  • Provide technical and logistical support for trail maintenance/construction, conservation, natural resource, and special initiative projects
  • Manage regional inventory of vehicles, tools and gear
  • Instill a culture of professionalism and caring, cultivate safety awareness within crews. Ensure compliance with MCC policies and safety standards within all crews
  • Ensure field work and activities are in compliance with MCC policies and regulations
  • Visit youth crews in the field to provide guidance, support, and assistance to youth crew leaders as well as ensure that project accomplishments meet project partner expectations 
  • Respond to in-field issues and emergencies; provide emotional and behavioral support to participants
  • Coordinate and organize gear and tool cache inventory systems and usage

Program Support:

  • Provide direction, support, and mentoring to program leaders and members, including ongoing training, and feedback
  • Contribute to MCC diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives
  • Ensure high quality implementation of MCC programming; thorough knowledge of MCC program objectives and outcomes as well as education and training curriculum
  • Demonstrate an ability to work across differences to promote inclusion of all staff, participants and partners
  • Oversee participant wellness through reviewing hitch paperwork such as crew reports or incident reports, and conducting one-on-one check-ins and debriefing. Assist with filing workers compensation claims when appropriate
  • Attend and support statewide trainings when requested
  • In coordination with Youth Program Manager, provide behavior improvement guidance and fair and appropriate discipline for participants as necessary
  • Participate in an emergency on-call schedule that rotates through various program staff 

Administrative Support:

  • Ensure crew paperwork is of high quality and properly filed/submitted in a timely fashion; including Programmatic Evaluations, Timesheets, Crew Reports, Incident Reports, Workers Compensation claims, Project Accomplishments, and Participant Evaluations 
  • Monitor projects and provide written documentation of site visits and program activities 
  • Coordinate all in-field project documentation requirements with Youth Crew Leaders, including written and photographic documentation of project accomplishments

Qualifications & Skills: 

MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • At least two years of college or military experience, or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum age of 21
  • Possess relevant technical skills including, but not limited to, trail maintenance and construction, fencing, stream bank restoration, backcountry travel and other natural resource work. Applicant should also possess experience with a wide range of power and hand tools
  • Previous leadership experience, skills, or training
  • Previous experience teaching, leading,  or training groups of young adults
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team, and able to balance responsibilities to competing priorities
  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel, cloud-based collaborative systems, and G Suite for businesses
  • Ability to pass a Criminal History Check
  • A valid driver’s license, ability to pass a Motor Vehicle Records check and ability to be insurable per MCC parameters

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to hike 3-12 miles per day in terrain that can be steep, rocky or uneven, often wearing a 60lb backpack and carrying tools
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds repeatedly and use hand and power tools
  • Willingness to work long, hard hours in all weather conditions
  • Ability to be away on overnight trips for up to two weeks at a time, usually camping in a tent
