Zookeeper

Project Survival’s Cat Haven is seeking an experienced Exotic Cat Keeper to join our dedicated Animal Care Team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in the daily husbandry, behavioral training, and enrichment of exotic felids, as well as demonstrated experience working with ambassador animals in public outreach and education programs. This position plays a critical role in maintaining the highest standards of animal welfare while supporting the organization’s conservation and education mission.

Key Responsibilities:

Animal Husbandry & Welfare

• Perform daily husbandry duties including cleaning, feeding, and observation of exotic felids (e.g., servals, cheetahs, bobcats, caracals, clouded leopards).
• Monitor animal health and behavior; document observations and report concerns promptly.
• Maintain enclosures and holding areas to meet or exceed USDA, California Fish and Wildlife, and internal welfare standards.

Behavioral Training & Enrichment

• Develop and implement operant conditioning and positive reinforcement training programs to facilitate husbandry, medical, and educational behaviors.
• Collaborate with the animal care team to create and deliver species-appropriate enrichment that encourages natural behaviors and enhances welfare.
• Track and evaluate training progress; adjust plans as needed.

Ambassador Animal Program

• Safely handle and present ambassador cats for on-site and off-site education programs, media appearances, and guest experiences.
• Work closely with the Education Department to develop engaging, conservation-focused messaging.
• Maintain ambassador animal training standards and ensure all presentations prioritize animal welfare.

Record Keeping & Compliance

• Accurately maintain daily logs, training records, and medical notes.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and organizational protocols.
• Participate in safety and emergency response procedures.

Teamwork & Professional Development

• Actively participate in keeper meetings, training workshops, and drills.
• Mentor junior staff and volunteers as assigned.
• Stay current on best practices in exotic carnivore care and ambassador programming.

Qualifications:

• Demonstrated experience with operant conditioning and protected-contact training.
• Prior ambassador animal handling and public presentation experience required.
• Strong knowledge of animal behavior, welfare principles, and enrichment strategies.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; comfortable engaging with diverse audiences.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
• Must be able to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
• Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs, work outdoors in various weather conditions, and meet physical demands of the position.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Minimum 2–3 years of professional experience working with exotic felids in a zoological, sanctuary, or similar setting.     
• Knowledge of emergency response and safety protocols for carnivore species.
• Certification in animal training or enrichment (e.g., Karen Pryor, IAABC, or similar) a plus.
• Degree in Zoology, Biology, Animal Science, or related field preferred.
