The British Embassy in Lima is seeking a highly motivated Intern to support its day-to-day operations. This is a fascinating role and provides an excellent opportunity to gain experience working for a major diplomatic mission in Peru. You will gain hands-on experience in embassy activities, develop professional and diplomatic skills, and contribute to the Mission’s objectives. You must be enrolled in an undergraduate programme or recently graduated (e.g. International Relations, Economics, Administration, International Business, or relevant field)
In this role you will provide support to the Department for Business and Trade (DBT). Trade and investment are at the very heart of British government policy. The UK’s Department for Business and Trade (DBT) helps British businesses to export, supports inward and outward investment, and champions free trade. Peru is an important business partner for the UK, and there is great potential to grow our trade and investment relationship.
With the support of your line manager, you will be expected to carry out tasks including:
Diplomatic Engagement and Logistics Support (55%)
- Provide administrative and logistical support to official visits, scoping trips, working meetings, launches and capacity building activities (like workshops, training sessions, and best-practice dissemination).
- Support the delivery of the embassy’s engagement objectives; arrange high-level meetings or events when required and contribute to briefing as needed.
- Contribute with projects’ monitoring and reporting under the guidance of thematic leads, especially through engagement with implementers, support in the preparation of meetings and review of deliverables.
- Support to maintain open lines of communication with key stakeholders in the Peruvian government, international donors, multilaterals, civil society, and businesses.
Team Support (35%)
- Provide wider support to other members of the team as required.
- Conduct background research on political, economic, or cultural topics.
- Translation of documents.
- Participate in Post crisis activities and any other ad-hoc embassy activities.
- Actively engage in corporate initiatives that foster a culture of fairness, inclusion, and continuous improvement, contributing to a more supportive and equitable workplace at the Embassy.
Learning and Development (10%)
- Attend learning and development events.
- Identify skills and development opportunities for professional growth.
- Actively participate in performance appraisal process and take responsibility from timely feedback.

- Good organisational skills are crucial, with strong attention to detail. Successful candidates will be required to support the organisation of strategic meetings.
- Interest in nourishing interpersonal communication skills, including collaborating and partnering with others, and understanding other actor’s perspectives with empathy and patience.

Applicants must be eligible to live and work in Peru in their own right at the time of application.
The successful candidate will be subject to a security clearance and professional reference checks
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list. If during the reserve period of 12 months the same or largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.

Working patterns:
30 hours per week, from Monday to Friday. The Embassy has core hours during which staff are expected to work from the office, but there is flexibility to enable applicants to complete their studies and it is normally possible to accommodate up to two days remote working in coordination with the line manager.
The FCDO operates an agile workforce. To facilitate this, you may be required to undertake other duties from time to time as we may reasonably require.

The jobholder will receive training according to the role, have full access to the UK Diplomatic Academy and online training resources and will be encouraged to take full advantage of both formal and informal learning events as and when available and relevant.
The FCDO also has mandatory training that all staff members need to complete.
