Main purpose of internship
The British Embassy in Caracas is recruiting a Political and Economics Intern. This is a varied and intellectually engaging role, combining political analysis with economic insight, supporting the team to monitor developments and to contribute to reporting.
The job holder will support the Embassy’s political and economic reporting, conducting research and analysis on current developments under the guidance of the Political and Economics Officer. Responsibilities also include daily monitoring of the Venezuelan news cycle, preparing briefing materials, assisting with data collection, and contributing to reports. In addition, the job holder will contribute to the wider work of the section, including supporting the organisation of key events and programmes, and assisting with project delivery and administrative tasks as required.
This is a dynamic role that requires strong analytical and research skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate initiative and sound judgement.
The role offers an excellent opportunity for early-career professionals or students to develop a wide range of skills, including political and economic analysis, policy research, and report writing, while gaining first-hand experience of working in a diplomatic mission.
Roles and responsibilities
- Political analysis and reporting: The job holder will research, analyse and report on key political developments in Venezuela. This will include producing weekly press summaries, as well as reactive and proactive reporting on thematic issue (60%).
- Economic analysis and reporting: Support the analysis of macroeconomic trends. This will include tracking economic indicators and policy changes, contributing to regular analytical summaries but not limited to growth, inflation, fiscal and monetary policy, and their implications for people’s living conditions (20%).
- Projects: The job holder will support the Embassy’s project work, including processing and reviewing bids and contributing to due diligence assessments (10%).
- Corporate: Contributing actively to Embassy committees and supporting delivery of corporate objectives. Providing flexible support and working interchangeably with other team members in line with the country business plan and direction from senior leadership (10%).

- fluency in Spanish (ideally native speaker) and English, with excellent written and verbal communication skills in both languages.
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret political and economic developments and produce clear, insightful reporting.
- Demonstrated understanding of the interconnection between political and economic trends, and their implications for policy.
- Excellent organisational and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and build trusted relationships across sectors.
- Willingness to take initiative, as well as being a flexible, responsible and reliable team player.
- Legal status to live and work in Venezuela in your own right, from time of Application.

Learning and development
The FCDO provides extensive learning and development opportunities through the Caracas L&D Group. The successful candidate will be required to carry out basic training on arrival in order to access the relevant FCDO systems.
Candidates must be eligible to work and live in Venezuela.
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list. If during the reserve period of 12 months the same or largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second of subsequent candidate.
