The British Embassy in Helsinki is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic, and consular interests overseas and is looking for a Head of Communications and Public Diplomacy.
Main purpose of the role:
Lead British Embassy Helsinki’s ambitious communications and public diplomacy work, helping us to deliver our Country Business Plan through excellent media engagement, high performing social media accounts and an extensive and high-impact programme of public diplomacy.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Media engagement:
- Support the Ambassador’s extensive media engagement, including arranging and preparing for TV, radio or print interviews on a wide range of topics from live security and defence issues to softer-focus pieces which promote UK soft-power and values.
- Working with other Embassy teams and colleagues in London as needed, generate responses to live media queries.
- Support visits from London as needed, including from Ministers/other VIPs.
- Develop and maintain a network of contacts in the Finnish media.
Social Media:
- Producing/overseeing outstanding content for British Embassy Helsinki social media channels, driving follower growth and generating consistently high levels of engagement.
- Support Embassy colleagues to produce their own content, and promote campaigns/content produced in London as required.
- Develop responses to queries from media outlets or members of the public.
Public Diplomacy:
- Line manage the Public Diplomacy Officer.
- Set the direction for an ambitious programme of visits and engagements and oversee successful delivery.
- To include events and visits involving the Ambassador/Deputy Ambassador, sometimes outside of Helsinki.
Strategy and metrics:
- Deliver the Comms and Public Diplomacy Strategy and produce quarterly metrics to track progress.
Other ad hoc duties may be required. There will be an occasional requirement to work outside normal hours when supporting visits or major events.

Our ideal candidate shows:
- Excellent level of written and spoken English and Finnish (both oral and written, minimum C1 level);
- Experience of working in journalism, public relations or communications roles.
- Experience running social media professional accounts and designing impactful campaigns.
- Strong understanding of the Finnish media landscape.
- Attention to detail, strong organisational awareness and time management skills, including the ability to prioritise.
- Flexible, resilient under pressure and decisive, with the ability to deliver quickly and to a high standard.
- High level of discretion.

This is a full-time, 36.25 hours per week, permanent position. From time to time, staff may be required to work beyond their conditioned hours during the week or at weekends to support events. In such cases, staff are entitled to time off in lieu (TOIL). All TOIL must be approved in advance.
The appointment is subject to professional background check, security clearance and the successful completion of a 6-month probationary period.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Finland are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Finnish employment law and FCDO guidance for Country Based Staff.
Staff at the British Embassy Helsinki who are not subject to Finnish income tax (i.e. non-Finnish nationals) have a reference amount deducted from their gross salary. This abatement reflects the local tax that would otherwise apply, ensuring consistent net pay across roles.
Pension and unemployment contributions are deducted for all staff. Salary payments are reported to the Finnish Income Register in line with legal requirements.
Learning and development opportunities: The British Embassy in Helsinki has a strong ethos of Learning and Development, including our L&D Week. In addition, there will be many opportunities to attend external seminars and events on relevant issues. This is in addition to induction programmes offered to all Embassy staff.
Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Finland and be prepared to ensure that this right remains valid throughout the scope of the contract.
