Overview of the School of Optical and Electronic Information, HUST

Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) is a comprehensive university located in Wuhan, Hubei Province, a transportation hub in China. It is under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education. On May 26, 2000, the former Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Tongji Medical University, Wuhan Urban Construction Institute, and Wuhan Science and Technology Vocational College combined to form the new HUST. It is part of China’s Project 985, Project 211, and the Double First Class University Plan. The campus covers an area of over 7,000 mu and boasts an abundance of trees, grass, and a beautiful landscape. With 72% of the campus covered in greenery, HUST is known as the “forest university”. It has a comprehensive system in place to support teaching and research, along with a wide range of public service facilities.

The history of the School of Optical and Electronic Information (SOEI) can be traced back to the Optical Instrument Teaching and Research Group and the Laser Research Group of the Department of Mechanics 1 established by the former Huazhong Institute of Technology (now the Huazhong University of Science and Technology) in 1970. SOEI has been at the forefront of creating laser and optoelectronics programs in China. In the late 1990s, Professor Huang Dexiu of SOEI wrote to the authorities of Hubei Province and Wuhan City to offer his suggestions and promote the construction of “Optics Valley of China”. He was known as the initiator of “Optics Valley of China, Wuhan”. SOEI is responsible for the construction of “Optical Engineering”, which is classified as a first-class national key discipline. Since 2018, SOEI has consistently secured the top spot in the Shanghai Ranking for the discipline of “Optical Engineering” within China, and it has continued to uphold its dominant position within the nation. In 2017 and 2021, the discipline of “Optical Engineering” was chosen to be part of the national construction of Double First Class disciplines, in the first and second rounds, respectively. HUST proposed to build a “first-class discipline group of optoelectronic information” with a focus on optical engineering and the proposal has been approved by the Ministry of Education.

HUST is actively contributing to the national strategy and the development of the regional economy and society. It plays a critical role in nurturing talents in optoelectronic information and ensuring the successful transformation of scientific and technological advancements in “Optics Valley of China, Wuhan”. After over 50 years of growth, SOEI has become a renowned institution for training optoelectronic talents in China.

Supported by the Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics, SOEI has a number of crucial educational and scientific research bases with excellent research facilities, including the National Engineering Research Center for Laser Processing, the National Engineering Research Center of Next Generation Internet Access-system, the Collaborative Innovation Center for Optoelectronic Technology Supported by the Province and the Ministry, the Key Laboratory of Electronic Information Functional Materials, Ministry of Education, the Wuhan International Joint Laboratory for Optoelectronics, the International Joint Research Center for High Power Lasers, the International Joint Research Center for Photoelectric Conversion and Detection, the Hubei Engineering Technology Research Center for Internet of Things Access, and the Hubei Optoelectronic Testing Service Center.

SOEI has an energetic and dedicated group of faculty members, including 6 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 7 winners of the National Excellent Young Scientists Fund, 1 winner of the National Famous Teacher Award, 30 other national-level talents (including young scholars), 29 provincial-level talent. The school has built a solid support for talent growth and career development.

SOEI offers a bachelor’s program in Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering, as well as authorized doctoral degree programs in two first-level disciplines: Optical Engineering and Electronic Science and Technology, and authorized doctoral degree programs in two second-level disciplines: Optoelectronic Information Engineering and Physical Electronics. In addition, SOEI has postdoctoral opportunities available in two first-level disciplines: Optical Engineering and Electronic Science and Technology. In 2019, the undergraduate program for Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering was chosen as part of China’s Double Ten Thousand Plan. The school has a remarkable pool of undergraduate and graduate students, with a total of 2,500 full-time students at all levels. Among the alumni, a group of exceptional scientists, educators, entrepreneurs, and political leaders have emerged. In 2018, SOEI received the first prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award for Higher Education. In 2019, it won the title of Outstanding Group in the National Education System. And in 2023, it received the second prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award for Higher Education.

In order to fulfill the requirements of scientific research and advancements in education, SOEI currently welcomes applications from talented individuals both domestically and internationally.
