The Central AMHP team is a centralised team which operates 24 hours a day 7 days a week and public holidays. The team is commissioned to carry out statutory assessments under the Mental Health Act, (1983 MHA) for consideration of compulsory admission to hospital and other AMHP related duties.

The AMHP Service carries out this function on behalf of Sheffield City Council.The team is based at the Sheffield Health and Social Care (SHSC) Crisis hub, Longley Centre, Sheffield S5 7JT. We have very good working relations and proximity to partner agencies such as Sheffield Health and Social Care, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and South Yorkshire Police

This is an exciting opportunity to become involved in the delivery of a safe, effective, and well led AMHP Service that is responsive, caring and maximizes people’s statutory rights. You will be responsible for providing Mental Health Act assessments in a timely manner. You will also be responsible for offering advice and consultation to multidisciplinary colleagues and other Stakeholders, regarding the use of mental health law. The service is constantly evolving to meet and keep up with its challenging role. The plan going forward with the National Workforce plan for AMHPs, is to continue developing a service model with adequate staffing around higher levels of activity and demand, to provide a seamless and responsive AMHP service.

We are seeking to recruit to a pool of AMHP qualified casual workers whom are will be committed to be contacted for sessional AMHP work both during, and outside, of normal working hours on a 24-hour rota.

You will need to have an appropriate professional qualification (Social Work, nurse, Occupational therapy, or psychology) along with having successfully completed AMHP training.

You will be required to work closely with team members, service users, carers and other relevant stakeholders to support the development and transformation of the Central AMHP Team; ensuring that best quality and performance standards are met, in line with service user and carer expectations, commissioner requirements and objectives of both Sheffield City Council and Sheffield Health and Social Care.

You will need to be already practicing as an AMHP or be AMHP qualified and have experience of MHA assessments, generic MHA functions, and risk management skills The ability to act independently and autonomously is essential.

If appointed to this role, your starting salary will be at the bottom of the grade. If you provide payslip evidence that your basic pay is greater than the bottom of the grade, we will consider starting you at the point of minimum advantage within the grade.
