Organizational Summary

Union Settlement is an East Harlem based nonprofit organization
founded in 1895. For 128 years, Union Settlement has provided
critical and innovative programming to children, youth, families,
and older adults. As a pioneer of the settlement house movement,
Union Settlement continues to meet the needs of the ever-changing
East Harlem community through its core programs. Through these
programs, New Yorkers gain opportunities, develop skills, and
become empowered to pursue and achieve their dreams.

Today, Union Settlement provides services through 33 program sites
in approximately 28 locations. Union Settlement’s current
programmatic portfolio includes 8 core program areas: Early
Childhood Education, Youth Services (including after school
programs), Family Services (including the Family Enrichment Center
and the Family Childcare Network), the East Harlem Community
Partnership, Adult Education, Mental Health Services, Older Adult
Centers, and Economic Development.  Union Settlement serves
more than 10,000 individuals and nearly 1,000 businesses every
year.

Position: Associate Director,

Location: On-site, with the potential for
some remote work.
Positions Reporting to this Role:  None

 

Position Summary:

The Associate Director, Institutional
Giving
is with a proven track record of identifying,
securing, and stewarding major foundation, corporate and government
gifts.  is responsible for managing and planning activities
that increase, diversity and sustain funding from corporate,
foundation and government entities for Union Settlement’s program
and initiatives.  The Associate Director is responsible for
leading, designing, and implementing a donor-centric strategy to
increase annual and multi-year revenue from corporate, foundation
and government principally through grants & endowments.
Reporting directly to the Director of Development, the
Associate Director, Institutional Giving
will be a key member of the Development Team. They must create
strong working relationships with staff and members of the
Executive Team, Senior Management Team and Board of Directors.

With a focused understanding of Union Settlement’s vision and
program needs, this role will help achieve the objective of
aligning fundraising efforts and strategic direction. The position
is responsible for overseeing systems and processes related to all
key aspects of Individual Giving fundraising.  This position
is accountable for donor research, moves management, donor
appreciation, database management, and all necessary actions to
achieve revenue targets. This individual serves as part of a
dynamic fundraising team by meeting with donors to cultivate and
solicit for increased level of giving. The Associate
Director, Individual Giving
will work with
leadership, Development team, volunteers, mission delivery team and
the broader philanthropic community to build and shape the
philanthropic vision for Union Settlement.

Responsibilities 

Grant Writing & Reporting:

  • Conceptualize and write compelling case statements and
    proposals for institutional funders, including complex proposals
    that require working closely with Union Settlement’s team
  • Ensure all application materials (e.g. narrative and
    attachments) are of the highest quality and all deadlines are
    met
  • Generate accurate and timely responses for all due diligence
    requests and/or grant reports during and after the grant
    agreement
  • Maintain the highest levels of accountability and compliance
    standards for donors and funding sources
  • Ensure timely submission to funders, and that deliverables and
    milestones are tracked appropriately for all grants Develop and
    implement grant contract review processes
  • Lead and execute site visits for current and potential
    funders

Solicitation & Strategy

  • Create and implement a strong fundraising strategy and plan
    targeting foundations, corporations, and government agencies
  • Initiate, cultivate, manage, and steward relationships with
    current foundation, corporation and government funders, expanding
    an existing portfolio with the goal of increasing revenue from
    institutional funders
  • Grow and maintain active pipelines and manage communications
    with existing and potential institutional donors by researching,
    identifying, evaluating and cultivating prospects
  • Identify fundraising opportunities, including program areas for
    funding aligned to organizational goals
  • Monitor and implement best practices and understand fundraising
    trends to advise on strategy
  • Serve as a primary fundraiser along with CEO and Development
    team, building donor relationships through face-to[1]face
    cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activity
  • Grow annual revenue from institutional donors through
    relationship-based fundraising and strategic moves management, with
    an emphasis on long-term stewardship and engagement
  • Create individual engagement, stewardship plans and giving
    goals for each donor based on giving history, relationship and the
    organization’s knowledge of the donor’s giving potential
  • Provide regular updates to CEO regarding institutional gift
    solicitations, moves management strategies and requests for
    leadership engagement/stewardship
  • Prepare for regular portfolio review meetings and moves
    management discussions in partnership with the CEO and the
    Development team to focus on strategic stewardship of donors
  • Serve as the point of contact for all institutional giving
    inquiries
  • Work with the CEO and the Development team to develop unique
    giving opportunities in the context of current campaigns, and to
    identify any needed collateral
  • Recruit and steward individual donors by building year-round
    engagement activities to maximize revenue, build donor loyalty
  • Collaborate with CRM Database Manager to implement prospect
    management strategies.
  • Identify and communicate potential opportunities and/or
    relationships to increase the chapter’s ability to raise funds and
    grant wishes
  • Meet or exceed institutional metrics of prospect meetings,
    proposals submitted and dollars raised.
  • Drive strategy and set goals for the Institutional Gifts
    program including building relationships with partners, identifying
    compelling funding opportunities, and collaborating with team
    members in to ensure the development of a fluid and enduring donor
    pipeline.
  • Represent Union Settlement in high-level external engagements
    with funders.
  • Generate detailed action reports and analytics on Individual
    Giving fundraising progress as requested.
  • Develop strong relationships within the community to foster a
    positive image of Union Settlement.
  • Achieve annual Individual giving targets.
  • Partner with the leadership to develop annual projections and
    budget for the Institutional Giving portfolio.
  • Lead strategy briefs and driving meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned

Job/Position Skills:

  • Nonprofit experience and a successful track record in
    fundraising program management.
  • Ability to work collaboratively to ensure strong departmental
    and chapter structure.
  • Adherence to deadlines, strong organizational and time
    management skills.
  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience in team-based, cross functional work environments
    with effective and respectful communication skills.

Qualifications: 

  • Willingness to travel locally and regionally
  • Bachelor’s Degree; Master’s Degree a plus.
  • Proven track record of at least 5+ years progressively
    responsible development experience, with demonstrable results
    across multiple streams of funding.
  • Strong understanding of fundraising principles, strategies, and
    trends in the non-profit sector.
  • Five plus years’ experience with donor databases, Salesforce
    preferred.
  • Experience in establishing and institutionalizing donor
    database best practices.
  • Passion for the organization’s mission and genuine commitment
    to its values. Familiarity with social service programs and a
    strong desire to help improve the lives of the residents in East
    Harlem.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and the
    ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced,
    challenging, constantly changing environment.
  • Overall flexibility and ability to work under pressure and meet
    deadlines.
  • A dedicated work ethic, diligence, and readiness to be a
    hands-on team member helping foster a collaborative and goal driven
    environment.
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Suite experience
    is essential.
  • Excellent computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft
    Suite. Preference for advanced skills in Excel, data analysis and
    creating data visualizations.
  • Knowledge of East Harlem community strongly preferred.
