Working with in-country partners, IRRI develops advanced rice varieties that yield more grain and better withstand pests and disease as well as flooding, drought, and other harmful effects of climate change.

 

Job Purpose

 

The Transformative Policies and Investments (Policies) Unit is seeking to recruit an Agricultural/Environmental Economist who will be part of the team working on economics of climate change mitigation in rice-based systems. The Agricultural/Environmental Economist will be responsible for ensuring effective and timely execution of analytical tasks, which include but not limited to: 1) design of data collection instruments and evaluation studies, 2) conduct of remote and on-field data collection, 3) management of datasets, 4) data analysis using statistical and econometric techniques, and 4) literature reviews, writing of reports and publications.

This position will be based at the IRRI Headquarters, Los Baños, Philippines and may only be filled by permanent citizens of the Philippines.

 

Roles and Responsibilities

 

  • Contribute to designing data collection instruments for studies on the economics of climate change mitigation in rice-based systems
  • Employ statistical and econometric techniques to analyze collected data
  • Conduct literature reviews, also including summarizing relevant findings
  • Execute both remote and on-field data collection efforts, ensuring high-quality and relevant data are collected for analysis. This includes organizing and managing field visits, as necessary, to collect data directly on the ground
  • Lead empirical research including the designing and implementation of behavioral experiments and other research studies based on the research outline provided
  • Develop standard procedures for studies in terms of sampling approaches/ data compilation strategies/ analysis process/ report writing
  • Collaborate on various projects and initiatives, contributing expertise in agricultural and environmental economics
  • Support with strategizing and formulating conceptual ideas with the team, collaborating partners (national/international) and seek feedback
  • Ensure effective conduct of research studies by troubleshooting and fostering a productive teamwork environment
  • Assist, collaborate, and supervise research scholars, technicians and/ or contract workers and other collaborators considering the implementation of research studies
  • Take charge of the organization, storage, and management of collected datasets.
  • Ensure data integrity and security while facilitating easy access for analysis purposes
  • Prepare reports and publications based on analysis and findings. Ensure that these documents meet high professional standards and are suitable for dissemination among stakeholders and the broader community
  • Monitor and manage the required services for research studies on a regular basis to ensure efficiency
  • Management of robust data maintenance to ensure efficient storage and retrieval of information

 

Qualifications

 

  • Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics, Environmental Economics, Environmental Sciences, Econometrics, or Data Science
  • With at least 3-5 years of combined experience in research activities on agricultural and environmental economics

 

Skills Required

 

Mandatory

  • Strong educational background in agricultural and environmental economics, econometrics or data science
  • Good understanding and experience with qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods tools and models
  • Excellent knowledge of econometrics techniques for ex-ante and ex-post impact assessment
  • Proficiency in using STATA or R
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English

Preferred

  • Knowledge and capable use of GIS mapping software such as ArcGIS or QGIS
