In recent years, several best practices of Welthungerhilfe and its partner network have been streamlined under one umbrella program, now branded the “Nutrition Smart CommUNITY”.The approach was initiated in India and is now being scaled-up in Bangladesh, Nepal, Tajikistan, Ethiopia, Malawi and Sierra Leone.
The program offers a community-based, cost-effective, and replicable implementation framework which integrates interventions across sectors. Its approach encompasses a combination of ‘systemic interventions’ at different levels, mainly designed to address underlying causes of chronic hunger and malnutrition and is based on the following four interlocking strategies: (1) Foster behavior change at household level (2) Strengthen and support community-based institutions (3) Activate and improve nutrition relevant services at community level and (4) Advocate and promote a multisectoral community-based implementation model for the Right to Adequate Food.
