A position is available for a Clinical Research Fellow in Neurology to provide support to a UK registries consortium using real world data to explore long-term outcomes in patients with multiple sclerosis.

The successful candidate should have proven experience in clinical neurology and multiple sclerosis/neuroinflammatory disease.  They will join a large research team with a strong track record of research. They will be highly motivated and organised with excellent communication and analytical skills. The post holder will be expected to register for a higher degree (PhD/MD or equivalent).

You will be based at the University Hospital of Wales, Heath Park, Cardiff.

This post is full time (40 hours per week), available immediately and fixed term until 31 December 2024.

Salary: £39,371 – £68,166 per annum (Clinical Grade D1).  Appointments to roles at Cardiff University are usually made at bottom of scale unless in exceptional circumstances however, for this position, the starting salary is capped at £49,924 due to limited funding.

Job Description

Job Purpose

Support the University within the multiple sclerosis and neuroinflammation research group, carrying out supporting work, providing advice, guidance and support, and leading projects within this area.

Duties and Responsibilities

Key Duties

•    To conduct clinically relevant research within multiple sclerosis and neuroinflammation and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University by the production of measurable outputs including bidding for funding, publishing in national academic journals and conferences, and the recruitment and supervision of postgraduate research students.
•    To develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding proposals.
•    To undertake administrative tasks associated with the research project, including the planning and organisation of the project and the implementation of procedures required to ensure accurate and timely reporting.
•    To engage with research partners, including patients, patient and representative groups to develop and promote research activities.
•    To recruit patients onto related clinical trials and to develop real world data to support analysis of long-term outcomes in multiple sclerosis and other neuroinflammatory diseases.
•    To collect relevant biological samples including blood and cerebrospinal fluid via venepuncture and lumbar puncture.
•    To register for and undertake a PhD or MD in a suitable area as agreed.
•    To disseminate research findings using appropriate and effective national and international publications, research seminars, meetings and conferences.
•    To communicate research to a wide-ranging audience (public, clinicians and academic) through public engagement activities.
•    To build and create networks both internally and externally to the university, to influence decisions, explore future research requirements, and share research ideas for the benefit of research projects.
•    To prepare research ethics and research governance applications as appropriate.
•    To review and synthesise existing research and clinical literature within the field.
•    To participate in School research activities.

General Duties

•    Ensure that an understanding of the importance of confidentiality is applied when undertaking all duties.
•    Abide by University policies on Health and Safety and Equality and Diversity.
•    Perform other duties occasionally which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria 

1.    Qualified medical practitioner and full GMC registration with licence to practice.
2.    Substantial experience in working within neurology and/or neuroinflammatory disease.
3.    Ability to demonstrate professional knowledge within specialist discipline to include expertise in the following areas:
a.    Neurology
b.    Multiple sclerosis and neuroinflammation

4.    Analytical skills – able to analyse and present complex data, in a range of formats to a variety of audiences.
5.    Ability to communicate conceptually detailed and complex information effectively and professionally with a wide range of people (clinicians and non-clinicians).
6.    Demonstrate the capability and drive to succeed in securing research funding.
7.    Proven ability to develop networks in order to contribute to long term developments.
8.    Aspiration to an academic clinical career and willingness to register for a higher degree (PhD/MD or equivalent).
9.    Evidence of ability to undertake and deliver specific projects and supervise short term project teams.
10.  Experience of giving presentations at conference/meetings.

Desirable Criteria

11.   MRCP.
12.   Experience of recruiting to clinical trials.
13.   Fluency in Welsh, written and oral.
