  • STATUS: Full-time or part-time, 2 year fixed-term contract with potential ongoing contract
  • SALARY: FTE $90 – 95,000 (depending on experience) + superannuation
  • LOCATION: Any location if the candidate is prepared and able to work from home
  • REPORTING TO: Change the Record National Director

About Change the Record

Change the Record is a national First Nations-led coalition made up of health, legal, family violence and campaigning experts. We campaign to end family violence against First Nations women and children, and the incarceration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People.

To Change the Record, we need to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to invest in holistic early intervention, prevention and diversion strategies. These are smarter, evidence-based and more cost-effective solutions that increase safety, address the root causes of violence against women and children, cut reoffending and imprisonment rates, and build stronger communities.

The role offers an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to take our campaigns to the next level by designing and implementing communications and media strategies that grow community engagement, influence governments and push crucial reforms across the line.

Core Responsibilities

You will work closely with the Change the Record National Director to design and lead our communications and engagement efforts to grow a movement of supporters who can take action and effect change.

We believe that we need to mobilise our community in support of action if we are going to convince decision-makers to change discriminatory laws and invest in community-driven solutions. Your job is to design and implement key communications strategies that underpin this work. You are passionate and committed to achieving real justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, especially through tackling the causes of criminalisation, over-incarceration, and systemic racism in the justice system. You are also committed to addressing the causes of family violence. You are self-motivated, skilled in strategic thinking, committed to working with a variety of different organisations and people in the movement and have a genuine commitment to community-driven change.

Your responsibilities will be to:

  • Manage CTR’s online and offline communications including identifying opportunities for campaigns and working with the National Director to design and implement media and communications strategies
  • Work with the National Director to identify, respond to and create media opportunities
  • Work with and support junior campaign staff
  • Focus on key priority campaigns identified in the Strategic Plan
  • Work with Operations & Partnerships Manager on supporter journeys for CTR’s 20,000 supporters
  • Draft supporter communications copy and website copy
  • Manage social media accounts, grow following and generate engaging online content
  • Other duties consistent with the role and agreed to by the National Director

Working with Change the Record members you will:

  • Develop and maintain strong partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations, as well as other key stakeholders including governments, industry and community organisations
  • Investigate ways to build our supporter base and engagement, including through campaign actions and engaging volunteers
  • Support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with lived experience of the legal system and family violence, as critical change-makers, to be involved in our work and have their voices heard
  • Create and communicate a vision that reimagines the justice & family violence systems with evidence-based Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander led solutions that focus on investment into alternative pathways and solutions to imprisonment
  • Grow our capacity, resources and membership, making sure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations and people are centred at every stage
  • Represent the Change the Record Campaign at meetings, seminars and conferences
  • Other duties consistent with the above, as negotiated with the National Director.

ESSENTIAL SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Experience in communications and/or media/media relations
  • Experience in and/or knowledge of campaigns
  • Experience in managing and leading online and offline engagement
  • Experience in designing and implementing communications and/or media strategies
  • Experience working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander or other Indigenous communities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills, especially in remote working environments
  • Excellent organisational, initiative and time management skills

DESIRABLE SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Experience with political analysis and judgement
  • Ability to use digital campaigning tools and community organising to build campaign impact
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Experience in liaising with supporters and donors
  • Experience working under Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership
  • Experience managing junior staff
