Description

Component Test Engineer in the Radiation Hardness Assurance and Component Analysis Section in the Technical Reliability and Quality Division, Product Assurance and Safety Department, Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality.

Duties

Your main tasks and responsibilities will include:

– preparing and conducting radiation test campaigns, including developing test set-up and performing subsequent data analysis with an emphasis on total ionizing dose (TID), displacement damage and single-event effects on electrical, electronic and electromechanical (EEE) components, test structures and materials in support of the Agency’s projects, studies, evaluation, qualification or radiation hardening activities;
– preparing, executing and monitoring testing of EEE components:

  •   Radiation effects: irradiation test campaigns in terms of hardware and software test set-up, preparation and verification for TID by gamma beam (Co60) and X-ray, single-event effects by californium and heavy ion beams, displacement damage, and emerging methods such as laser-induced radiation effects;
  •   Design and implementation of adapted test set-ups in hardware and software;
  •   ISO accreditation and certification activities;
  •   Contributions to departmental QMS activities within the scope of the specific tasks;
  •   Performing failure analysis and evaluation tasks for component qualification;

–    providing technical expertise to support the Agency’s projects in the field of EEE component radiation hardness assurance.
–    defining relevant radiation studies and experimental and development activities, including in-flight component radiation characterization experiments, so as to initiate and manage such activities implemented under ESA contracts.

 

Further duties:
–    Actively contributing to the Section’s standardization activities, particularly those involving general radiation hardness assurance procedures, irradiation test guidelines, including SEE, TID and displacement damage, modelling and simulation issues.
–    Conducting simulations of radiation effects in components and materials, using suitable devices and physics-based software tools to produce new or improve existing models.
–    Coordinating such activities with internal and external partners and promoting the results achieved in the form of publications, presentations and training.
–    Carrying out functional and parametric electrical testing and analysis tasks, particularly concerning discrete and complex semiconductor components.
–    Advising on the assessment of test methods, test flows, test programs, test equipment and the planning of relevant laboratory investments.

 

 

Your duties may also include performing other activities within your field of competence.

Technical competencies

Experience in radiation hardness assurance testing methods
Experience in working in an irradiation testing facility involving Co60, proton or heavy ion
Experience in drafting and reviewing test reports on the testing of electronic components
Experience in radiation effects and their mitigation in electronic systems
Experience in drafting and reviewing test plans

Education

A master’s degree in science or engineering is required.

Additional requirements

Experience in working under an ISO 9001-certified QMS in an ISO 17025-accredited environment is preferred.
Auditing experience is desirable.

Important Information and Disclaimer
In principle, recruitment will be within the advertised grade band (A2-A4). However, if the selected candidate has less than four years of relevant professional experience following the completion of the master’s degree, the position may be filled at A1 level.

 

Applicants must be eligible to access technology and hardware which is subject to European and US export control regulations & security clearance by their national security administrations.

 

During the recruitment process, the Agency may request applicants to undergo selection tests. Additionally, successful candidates will need to undergo basic screening before appointment, which will be conducted by an external background screening service, in compliance with the European Space Agency’s security procedures.

Note that ESA is in the process of transitioning to a Matrix setup, which could lead to organisational changes affecting this position.
