Concord Land Conservation Trust seeks a mission-driven Executive Director to lead a community-based land trust dedicated to preserving natural landscapes and supporting long-term land stewardship through partnership, education, and community participation.

About the Land Trust

Concord Land Conservation Trust is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving natural landscapes and agricultural land, protecting wildlife habitat and ecosystems, and connecting people to the land through stewardship, education, passive recreation, and community partnerships. We work collaboratively with landowners, the Town of Concord, conservation partners, and community members to support the long-term protection and stewardship of Concord’s open spaces and natural resources.

Founded in 1959, the Land Trust is one of the oldest local land trusts in the country and reflects Concord’s longstanding tradition of balancing conservation, agriculture, and community use of the land. Governed by a Board of Trustees and supported by approximately 600 member families, the Land Trust has protected more than 1,000 acres through land ownership and holds conservation restrictions on an additional 360 acres. A subsidiary organization, Concord Open Land Foundation, was established in 1988 to facilitate conservation transactions in which acquired land, or portions of it, may later be sold or exchanged to advance conservation objectives.

Position Summary

The Executive Director is responsible for advancing the Land Trust’s mission through executive leadership, organizational management, fundraising, community engagement, and stewardship oversight. Working closely with the Board of Trustees, staff, volunteers, donors, and community partners, the Executive Director guides the organization’s ongoing conservation and stewardship efforts while supporting its long-term sustainability and effectiveness.

The Executive Director oversees a small and dedicated team that includes a Manager of Land Stewardship, a part-time bookkeeper, a summer intern, volunteers, consultants, and contractors. The ideal candidate will bring nonprofit management, relationship-building, and operational and financial management experience, along with the ability to work independently while managing a broad range of responsibilities in a collaborative environment.

Position Responsibilities

Executive Leadership

• Implement the organization’s strategic plan and priorities while providing leadership, advice, and support to advance land conservation, stewardship, and community engagement goals set by the Board of Trustees.
• Work with the Board Chair and Treasurer to develop annual and long-range budgets and provide supporting financial and operational information to the Board.
• Coordinate monthly Trustee meetings in partnership with the Board Chair and Executive Committee, including agenda development and preparation of meeting materials and reports, and distribution of the minutes prepared by the Secretary.
• Act as the Land Trust’s representative in routine engagements with membership and the general public, including maintaining regular in-office hours, and responding to in-bound communications in a timely manner.

Operations & Financial Management

• Manage organizational administration, including records and information management, databases, office systems, payroll coordination, insurance policy monitoring and maintenance, and other core administrative functions.
• Manage organizational compliance and reporting processes, collaborate with external professional consultants and advisors, as well as financial administration and reporting, in collaboration with bookkeeper.
• Supervise staff and oversee volunteer and contractor activities coordinated by the Manager of Land Stewardship.

Land Conservation & Stewardship

• Support land acquisition campaigns and related conservation projects.
• Ensure responsible stewardship and monitoring of conserved properties, including development and implementation of management plans for owned properties.
• Supervise Manager of Land Stewardship’s work.

Fundraising & Development

• Support donor stewardship and membership growth initiatives.
• Implement fundraising efforts including annual appeals, acquisition campaigns, business sponsorships, grants, and planned giving.
• Maintain donor and membership records and ensure timely acknowledgement of gifts.

Community Relations & Outreach

• Serve as a representative of the Land Trust at public events, meetings, and external engagements.
• Cultivate and sustain relationships with landowners, conservation partners, town departments, and regional stakeholders.
• Lead outreach, communications, and community engagement strategy, including print and electronic newsletters, website content, and social media.
• Oversee volunteer engagement and community programming and collaborate with partner organizations to expand public engagement and awareness.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree.
• Demonstrated commitment to land and/or natural resource conservation.
• Relevant leadership or nonprofit management experience.
• Experience and comfort supervising staff and volunteers.
• Experience and comfort with fundraising and donor development.
• Familiarity with financial management and budgeting.
• Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of stakeholders and community partners.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, WordPress; experience with Little Green Light and Landscape Land Conservation Software desired.
• Familiarity with QuickBooks Online and basic bookkeeping concepts.

Location & Work Requirements

• Concord Land Conservation Trust is based in Concord, MA.
• Full-time, salaried, exempt position requiring regular in-office presence, with some field-based and flexible remote work.
• Schedule is generally Monday through Friday, with occasional evening and weekend meetings or events.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle; travel is primarily local and includes visits to conservation properties.
• Ability to hike and work outdoors on varied terrain and in changing weather conditions.
• Ability to lift heavy objects on occasion.
• Satisfactory background check (CORI) required.

Compensation & Benefits

• Annual salary range: $75,000–$85,000, commensurate with experience.
