Media and Stories Officer

Do you have an eye for a good story and a finger on the pulse when it comes to what’s hitting
the headlines? Friends of the Earth is looking for an ambitious, proactive and dedicated Media
and Stories Officer to join its high-achieving media team. You will use your skills as a
first-rate communicator to write press materials that gain cut-through in a competitive media
landscape, develop and pitch exciting, proactive media packages that raise brand and campaign
profile, and maximise our impact through compelling storytelling that inspires hope and action.

Key Skills and Attributes: 

• Ability to thrive in a busy press office and respond to fast-moving news cycles and
  proactively place media stories in national, local and regional outlets.
• Ability to turn complex issues or causes into news stories in a simple and engaging way.
• Can demonstrate judgement on reputational risk or negative news stories.
• Excellent writing skills for different types of media, audiences and communications
  channels.
• An eye for spotting powerful stories, and a strong understanding of what would be of
  interest to mainstream national, local and regional media and content platforms.
• Able to manage competing priorities, work to tight deadlines and remain calm under
  pressure.
• Ability to pitch confidently when building new relationships with journalists or building
  on an existing network of journalist contacts.

The team: 

We are a small but mighty team with big ambitions to sustain and build on our already
impressive level of media coverage. You will be joining as we explore new creative and
compelling ways to bring our work as an environmental justice organisation to life, and land
our campaign messages in a way that resonates with harder-to-reach audiences and those already
sympathetic to Friends of the Earth’s mission. Together, we will work to deliver the campaign
wins that are critical to building a safer, fairer, zero-carbon future, harnessing the power of
stories and spokespeople from the frontlines of the climate crisis to change hearts and minds.

Hours: Full time (30 hours over 4 days)

Location: Flexible across England, Wales and Northern Ireland
