Rationale and context of the assignment

To increase and enhance UNICEF Botswana’s visibility, the country office seeks to engage a service provider to offer photographic documentation of programmatic areas, special initiatives and other related work. The purpose of the assignment is to develop a collection of high-quality photographs documenting the situation of children and UNICEF’s work in Botswana. The photo collection will be used in producing printed materials such as posters, flyers, brochures, folders and digital materials such as website and social media platforms to leverage and engage UNICEF’s audiences, partners and donors.

How can you make a difference? 

Scope of Work:

Professional photojournalism/documentary coverage of UNICEF supported programmes as well as general advocacy on the subject i.e.  coverage should include documentation of programme intervention as well as documenting the situation that shows the need for intervention for distribution through WeShare[1] to UNICEF internally, UNICEF National Committees, and other internal and external partners such as media, NGO and UN partners.

Main Deliverable:

Approximately 400 high quality photographs. The photos will reflect the situation of children across different stages of their life cycle and UNICEF’s work in Botswana in the following programme areas:

  • Child Protection
  • Education
  • Early Childhood Development
  • Health and Nutrition
  • HIV and Adolescent Engagement
  • Generation Unlimited
  • GIGA and
  • Social Protection
  • The photographer will cover the following districts:
    • Gaborone
    • Maun
    • Okavango
    • Ghanzi
    • Kweneng West
    • Southern

Photographic documentation.

  • Wide range of shots- dramatic angles, closeup, midrange, and wide-angle shots must be used.
  • Each image from the optimized edit as well as the full take must include the IPTC metadata: full name of photographer for photo credit, the name of the event/ assignment, country.
  • Photos must have descriptive captions written in complete sentences – describing, who, what, when and where of the photo or photoset.
  • Descriptive captions for all broad edit photos, quotes from central characters/subjects in the photo coverage serving to tell a first-person narrative story; quotes from a more personal nature from photo coverage characters/subjects directly addressing the camera with their gaze.

  • Please note: To photograph children under 18 years old consent must be sought. UNICEF BOTSWANA will provide blank consent forms to be filled.

Programme coverage – professional photojournalism/documentary coverage of UNICEF Botswana supported programmes as well as general advocacy on the subject i.e. coverage can include documentation of programme intervention as well as documenting the situation that shows the need for intervention for distribution 

  • through WeShare to UNICEF Botswana internally and other internal and external partners such as media, NGO and UN partners.
  • Social media – UNICEF Botswana regularly posts on social media. The posts are heavily influenced by the country office’s programmatic areas (child protection, health & nutrition, education and social policy). Other posts seek to support continental and global initiatives such as Day of the African Child, World Children’s Day among others. UNICEF Botswana leverages social media to communicate with its stakeholders regularly. As a best practice, UNICEF Botswana uses pictures that are powerful and compelling to accompany messages.
  • First person narrative visual storytelling with captions & quotes – professional photojournalism/documentary storytelling focused on an individual subject, telling the story through the life and experiences of an individual. Visual storytelling includes captions and first-person quotes furthering the storytelling.
  • Everyday Voices – portraits of people directly addressing the camera with their gaze, participating in their own representation with personal quotes that serve to further storytelling and engage the audience in the issue through identification with an individual.
  • Campaigns and Advocacy – From time to time, UNICEF Botswana develops and rolls out campaigns as a means of public outreach to disseminate key messages to stakeholders.

 Responsibilities

  • The consultant shall supply all photographic equipment and provide transmissions of rough edit selections of best images, with complete caption information.
  • On assignment completion, the broad edit will be transferred electronically and by external drive to the Communications and Advocacy and Partnerships Officer with complete captions.
  • UNICEF BOTSWANA has first selection rights to all originals taken on this assignment with non-exclusive concomitant world rights in all media in perpetuity.

Guidance and Supervision  

  • The service provider shall receive guidance on assignments from the Communications and Advocacy and Partnerships Officer.
  • The assignment’s overall supervision will be rendered by the Communications and Advocacy and Partnerships Officer, including the review and approval of deliverables.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have… 

  • Qualifications or Specialized Knowledge/ Experience Required

    • Exceptional photo and editing skills
    • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in photography and recording similar projects/ activities, with traceable references
    • Ability to deliver products according to specific technical requirements.
    • Ability to commence and travel at a mutually agreed date.
    • Ability to adhere to deadlines and flexibility.
    • The consultant must be sensitive and respectful of people, situations, and cultural differences.

Knowledge/Expertise/Skills required

  • Ability to deliver images and multimedia slideshows according to the specified quality and technical requirements.
  • Good knowledge of technical requirements and settings for taking photos in various settings (i.e. outdoor, indoor, portraits, group activities etc.) is expected.
  • Experience covering social, humanitarian and development subjects will be an asset.

Technical proposal:

Interested individuals will submit a Technical Proposal, with a description of their experience, as well as a portfolio of previous work. The Technical Proposal should include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Short profile, including CV, diplomas, certificates of photography-related studies.
  • Detailed individual portfolio showcasing range of work (i.e. outdoor, indoor conferences, portraits, group activities etc.) with links to specific sites/media outlets/publications where the works have been published.
  • A description of production capabilities: photographic equipment for taking quality images in studio and outdoors, including related hardware and software to manage images.

Financial proposal in local currency (BWP) aligned to the assignment to be submitted. 

Application submitted without technical and financial proposal will not be considered. 

Copyrights

UNICEF BOTSWANA will have the right to use the photos in perpetuity in print, web and on multimedia platforms and upload on its global database.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws. 

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
