Project Description

The Kenya Primary Literacy Program (KPLP) is a USAID-funded five-year initiative that supports the Kenyan Ministry of Education to deliver interventions at scale as well as pilot and expand innovations that address the language and literacy needs of primary grade learners while building more inclusive, accountable, and resilient education institutions and systems.

KPLP has three broad objectives:

1. Improving education services and student learning outcomes, including for vulnerable populations;

2. Strengthening education institutions and systems to become more accountable, self-sustaining, and resilient; and

3. Empowering local youth organizations to strengthen and sustain community and family support for student learning and wellbeing.

Position Description

The Pre-service Teacher Training Institute (PTTI) Officer supports the PTTI Capacity Building Advisor with technical assistance and collaboration with Pre-Service Teacher Training Institutes (PTTIs). This role involves collaboration with pre-service education stakeholders, including in the following activities: facilitating joint curriculum reviews, supporting the development of teaching practice assessment tools, and supporting training initiatives to enhance the quality of teacher professional development for Grade 1-3 language and literacy teaching methodology. The Officer will also support the adaptation of curriculum and assessment tools for trainees working with learners with vision and hearing disabilities. The PTTI Officer will report to the PTTI Capacity Building Advisor. This is a full-time position based in Nairobi.

The PTTI Officer’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • In collaboration with public pre-service teacher-training institutions (PTTIs) and KPLP team, support a comprehensive joint review of TTC curriculum, materials, and pedagogy for Grade 1-3 English and Kiswahili.
  • Work as part of a team to collaboratively facilitate adjustments and additions to TTC curriculum, incorporating content on remediation and continuous assessment approaches.
  • Provide technical assistance to the development of a teaching practice assessment tool aligned with the Grade 1-3 Competency Based Curriculum language and literacy teaching methodology.
  • Support the adaptation of curriculum and teaching practice assessment tools for trainees working with learners with vision and hearing disabilities.
  • Organize and help facilitate working sessions with TTC heads and language chairs.
  • Collaborate with counterparts to develop and refine training materials.
  • Support and/or facilitate Training of Trainers (TOTs) sessions and provide training to TTC English, Kiswahili, and Special Needs Education tutors.
  • Provide technical assistance in the field of early grade reading.
  • Support quality control in the implementation of training initiatives.
  • Collaborate in the development and implementation of the collaboration, learning, and adapting (CLA) agenda.
  • Support the preparation of data and information for project quarterly and annual reports, and other data as required.
  • Coordinate administrative aspects related to workshops, training, and collaborative efforts with PTTIs.

The candidate for the position of Pre-service Teacher Training Institute (PTTI) Officer shall have at a minimum the following qualifications:

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Education, Early Grade Reading, Literacy, Curriculum Development, or related field.

Skills and Experience:

  • 5 to 6 years of progressively responsible and directly relevant experience required.
  • Knowledge in the design of effective, inclusive curriculum, materials, and instructional approaches in a bilingual and transitional early grade literacy learning context.
  • Experience with TTIs and pre-service language and literacy instruction.
  • Experience as a primary school classroom teacher and in providing CBC-aligned language and literacy instruction.
  • Experience with training programs for literacy, early grade reading, and inclusive education.
  • Experience in pre-service teacher training programs in Kenya.
  • Experience using technology to support instruction and learning, and/or instructional leadership development preferred.
  • Experience in disability-inclusive, gender-responsive literacy curriculum and materials design preferred.
  • Capacity to work in difficult conditions and function well under pressure and hard deadlines.
  • Experience in collaboratively designing and delivering technical assistance with education sector counterparts and stakeholders preferred.

Language:

Fluency in English and Kiswahili is required.

Other:
