Location: Flexible/ Remote – The successful candidate can either work from within the Africa region, or remotely (with frequent travel to HALO’s Africa programmes and UK offices required)

Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience

Contract: 12-month fixed term contract (with the possibility to extend, dependent on funding)

Reports to: Head of Global Medical

Job Purpose:

The Regional Medical Manager is responsible for assisting in the effective coordination and delivery of medical matters across the Africa region (Angola, Ethiopia, Somalia, Somaliland and Zimbabwe) on behalf of the Head of Global Medical. They will act as a regional subject matter expert, implementing and following up on Medical Board visit recommendations and changes to global medical policy. Depending on the region, the Regional Medical Manager may be asked to coordinate the activities of, and line manage, Chief Medics within the area.

About the role:

HALO is seeking a dynamic Regional Medical Manager to assist with the effective coordination and delivery of emergency prehospital medical care on HALO work sites, as well as general staff health across the Africa region.  This role demands a significant travel commitment, with regular visits to program sites, often in remote and potentially hazardous locations. You will work closely in partnership with the Head of Global Medical, Regional Director, Deputy Regional Director and Programme Chief Medics to aid the smooth and effective running of medical activities across the region in support of HALO’s mission.

Responsibilities:

  • Help ensure that HALO’s Head of Global Medical and the Medical Board’s expert advice and policy decisions are effectively communicated and implemented through the region
  • Help the Regional Director and Deputy Regional Director form and disseminate regional policies, strategies and plans relating to emergency prehospital care and staff health
  • Ensure that the Head of Global Medical’s annual priorities and objectives are understood throughout the region
  • Research, understand and help develop partnerships with medical NGOs in the area of operations, in order to increase funding opportunities and deliver health education to our staff.
  • Engage regional medical and operations staff to ensure delivery of regional or organisational priorities and objectives, and monitor progress in the delivery
  • Provide support to staff and aid in the communication between staff at both the regional and programme / project level to assist in the smooth running of business
  • Support the Regional Director in responding to information requests and returns from Directors, Chiefs, the CEO and third parties
  • Remain informed about HALO’s activities and staff, providing insight and advice to the Head of Global Medical and Regional Director when necessary
  • Convene and organise remote and in person training as directed by the Head of Global Medical
  • Help to ensure that staff in the region have good access to medical and health related information and consider ways and means to improve this
  • Be a subject matter expert in health challenges specific to the Region, including but not limited to infectious diseases, WASH, women’s health, environmental health and psychological health
  • Act as another conduit for information to come up from staff in programmes / projects to the Head of Global Medical, Regional Director and other regional staff
  • Be prepared to visit programmes, including remote and potentially hazardous areas for extended periods of time in order to support staff face to face
  • Where required, line manage optional staffing functions required by the region and provide Chief Medics and other Programme medical staff with mentoring and support to help them carry out their roles effectively and aid their wellbeing
  • Provide the Trauma Risk Management (TRiM) Manager function for the Region, ensuring that TRiM Practitioner roles are filled and that staff have adequate training

General:

  • Support and advise the Regional Director and other staff in the region as and when required
  • Uphold HALO’s core values and standards, promoting its ethos and mission statement
  • Ensure familiarity with and adhere to all HALO policies and procedures and keep informed of HALO activities
  • Act as Duty Officer as and when required
  • Maintain a motivated and effective working manner, fostering a positive working environment

Requirements

  • Be a fully qualified and registered healthcare professional, ideally with a background in prehospital or emergency medicine such as a Paramedic or Emergency Department Nurse
  • Knowledge of travel health including common tropical infectious diseases and vaccination requirements is desirable
  • A Post Graduate qualification in a Global Health related field, such as the Professional Diploma in Tropical Nursing (PDTN), is desirable
  • Qualification in Trauma Risk Management as a Manager or Practitioner, or willingness to complete this training
  • Evidence of being a practice educator or mentor with a track record or mentoring and coaching others
  • A self-starter, able to use initiative and make judgements around competing priorities
  • Able to demonstrate excellent organisational, project management and delivery skills
  • An excellent communicator with the ability to create high quality presentations, reports and briefing papers
  • Able to influence and build relationships with a wide variety of individuals
  • Able to work flexibly and manage a demanding workload
  • Capable of strong individual contribution and influence across non-direct reporting teams
