Introduction :

Conduct Awareness Campaign for Complaint Reporting and Management System for Illegal Environmental Activities in Sri Lanka.

Environmental crimes are a major impediment to development, peace and security and the lack of awareness among the general public on the topic of environmental destruction and subsequent consequences undermines all efforts to protect our eco systems and bio-diversity. Sri Lanka has faced a spate of environmental issues in recent years, with an increased rate in unsanctioned environmental activities caused by intentional human actions leading to the loss of human and animal lives, mass destruction of habitats, eco-systems, livelihoods and land, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to serious environmental implications. UNDP Sri Lanka CO was one of the recipients of funds from the UNDP Anti-Corruption Innovation Initiative which is a part of UNDP’s Anti-Corruption for Peaceful and Inclusive Societies (ACPIS) Global Project, funded by Norad, the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation and Sida, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency. The main objective of the Anti-Corruption Innovation Initiative is to promote transparency, accountability and anti-corruption through technology and innovation to build forward better and accelerate the achievement of the SDGs.
To this end, the ‘Digital Citizen Engagement for the Prevention of Illicit Environmental Activities’ initiative has been launched by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Sri Lanka, in collaboration with the Ministry of Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation, the Citra Social Innovation Lab, and the Centre for Environmental Justice (CEJ). Sri Lanka’s project, which is led by the Citra Social Innovation Lab, is aimed at developing a citizen engagement platform, through a digital application accessible via mobile device and PC, which will connect citizens wishing to report unsanctioned environmental activities to government officials, connect relevant government officials and agencies in order to resolve the complaint, and provide information to citizens on relevant environmental legislation and their environmental rights
