Senior Crew Leader

Job Overview: 

A Senior Crew Leader will be an essential part of the Howard Ecoworks team in leading the Senior Crew in the implementation of environmental services, including the installation of conservation landscapes, tree installations, rain gardens, and more. The Ecoworks Senior Crew is responsible for the delivery of the Rent-an-EcoCrew service, which involves client interaction and project management.  Additional work will include leading crews in performing maintenance of stream restoration projects, removing debris from waterways, maintenance of bioretentions, rain gardens, conservation landscapes, and more. The Senior Crew Leader is an integral part of the field team by providing experience, knowledge, support, and guidance to the Senior Crew Members as well as Program Participants (Uplift / READY crews). The Senior Crew Leader is designated to lead, instruct, and supervise crews to safely execute project work, meeting quality standards and defined schedules. The Senior Crew Leader will be responsible for the support of general company field operations including site inspections, vehicle, tool, and farm upkeep, and more operational duties as assigned. The Senior Crew Leader is the supervisor to Senior Crew Members.

Responsibilities & Duties:

• Supervise Senior Crew Members, including performance management, goal setting, conflict management, disciplinary actions, as needed, team building, etc.
• Daily crew attendance and morning communications
• QC and approval of Crew Members’ timesheets on a weekly basis
• Confirming and ensuring accuracy of daily time reporting allocations in WhatsApp chat
• Direct crew members during daily field operations: morning meeting time, loading/ unloading of work vehicles, throughout project work, in cleanup of job sites and end of day processes
• Safely drives the company vehicle(s) and trailer to transport the crew and/or materials to and from job sites
• Effectively leads and supervises crews to properly implement and/or maintain projects
• Participate alongside team in the construction and maintenance of environmental landscaping practices such as conservation landscapes, rain gardens, native tree plantings, and stream restoration projects
• Ensure projects are completed to quality standards within set timeframes
• Read and implement work plans and project designs to ensure proper execution of services
• Collection of project metrics and reporting needs, including photos
• Ensure proper use, storage, care, maintenance and upkeep for all equipment, tools, materials, etc, by field crews
• Main liaison between Field Team and Operational staff
• Enforces safety protocols, including incident reporting
• Ensures all vehicles, equipment, and teams are accounted for at the end of each day and that equipment and barns are locked up daily
• In-field training and support for Program participants including tool usage, site safety, field skills, etc.
• Driving/usage of company vehicles, trailers and/or other equipment in accordance with company policies

Qualifications & Requirements:​

• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Previous experience working in landscaping, stormwater management, or other similar environmental field work
• Preference given to those who have completed a Howard Ecoworks Program (Uplift / READY)
• Proven track record of strong leadership, communications, and process improvement skills
• Ability to work in a variety of outdoor settings including forests and streams
• Able to lead a team as well as work independently
• Able to physically stand, bend, squat, and lift up to 40 pounds
• Minimum basic level of native and invasive plant species identification
• Must have reliable transportation to meeting location in Glenwood, MD
• Must be dependable
• Able to communicate clearly and effectively to crew members, management, clients and the general public

Preferred Qualifications:

• Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and ability to obtain DOT medical examiner certification
• Experience driving a truck and trailer
• Passion and/or interest in the outdoors
• Passion for conservation, restoration and environmental issues
• Flexible with changes in day-to-day tasks

Wage: $18.50/hr

Job Timeline:

This is ideally a full-time position, although part-time positions may be negotiated.  Standard field crew hours are Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Weekend work opportunities may be available but are not mandatory.  Work in the field is weather-dependent.  Indoor training and professional development opportunities may be offered on bad-weather days, if possible.
