The PNH unit provides leadership and action for the promotion of health and the prevention of premature death and disability by addressing key health-related social, environmental, and behaviouralrisk factors and determinants of relevance to NCDs and the Life-course.The WHO Country Office in the South Pacific located in Suva, Fiji, operates under the umbrella of the Regional Office for the Western Pacific, and coordinates the provision of technical support for the countries and areas of the Pacific Islands. The Country Office works together with a broad spectrum of partners from all sectors of society.
Specific roles to be undertaken within this job: Under the supervision of the Team Coordinator and guidance of the HWO, the incumbent performs the following duties: 1. Provides technical support to PICs in the development and implementation of NCD policies, strategies and plans with a focus on prevention; 2. Collaborates with Member States to strengthen national technical capacity and activities to prevent NCDs, with a focus on best buys and other recommended interventions and other proven approaches, particularly those with impacts on obesity; 3. Provides capacity-building support and guidance on evaluation and impact assessment on measures to reduce obesity, and to prevent NCDs; 4. Builds and maintains effective working relationships with government agencies, donors and development partners to coordinate appropriate programmatic and resource mobilization activities; 5. Ensures effective management of human and financial resources under his/her supervision; and 6. Performs other related duties as required. Expected outputs/outcomes Provides technical support to PICs to prevent NCDs, and reduce the mortality, morbidity and disability from NCDs.
Essential: University degree in medicine, nursing, nutrition or relevant health field, from an institution or university recognized in the International Association of Universities’ Worldwide Database of Higher Education Institutions, Systems and Credentials (WHED).
Desirable: Postgraduate qualification in related field of diet, physical activity, health promotion or public health.
Essential: Minimum five years’ work experience in NCDs including but not limited to public health measures to prevent NCDs including exposure at international level.
Desirable: Experience working in Pacific Islands Experience of developing and planning national NCD prevention measures, policy actions and evaluation. Relevant work experience in WHO, other UN agencies, relevant nongovernmental organizations
Knowledge of the specific or technical area of public health; ability to develop plans and proposals;ability to establish harmonious working relationships as part of a team, adapt to diverse educational and cultural backgrounds, and maintain a high standard of personal conduct; ability to demonstrate gender equity and cultural appropriateness in the delivery of services to Member States. Specific expertise and knowledge required:Knowledge of NCD health issues, challenges and requirements in limited resource environments, including knowledge on evidence based NCD interventions and experience with policy and strategy development processes. Knowledge on diet, and physical activity improvement approaches and existing global and recgional guidance and recommended actions. Skills in analysis, planning, management of public health prevention programmes with NCD specificity. Ability to work harmoniously with partner agencies, development partners and country counterparts; strong written and spoken English skills, including report writing and presentation skills.

Desirable:
WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 64,121 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 2479 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
