Two Non-Tenure Track Positions in Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at Davidson College seeks to hire two non-tenure track faculty members for the 2024-25 academic year: one a Lecturer in a position featuring renewable, multiyear contracts, and the second a Visiting Assistant Professor for a one-year term.  Both positions begin July 1, 2024.

The Lecturer position is a potentially long-term appointment, pending outcomes of reviews, and is focused on teaching. The Lecturer will be an integral part of the department, and over time will take on service commitments across the college that align with their pedagogical and personal interests. Conversely, the VAP position is a short-term sabbatical replacement, with no service expectations, intended for scholar-teachers with a PhD and could help candidates gain valuable teaching experience as part of their search for tenure-track employment. Applicants qualified for both positions could choose to apply for both, however these positions must be applied for separately.

As a department and a college, we are committed to supporting diversity and inclusion , and current members of the department actively participate in initiatives that enrich the teaching and mentoring of our diverse student body.  We especially welcome candidates who have benefited from, contributed to, or created programs directed toward diversity and inclusion.

Lecturer in Chemistry

Duties include teaching lecture and laboratory classes in general chemistry and chemistry for non-STEM majors; these courses are typically capped at 32 students.  Occasional teaching at the foundational level may be required; applicants with the ability to teach 200-level courses in analytical or inorganic chemistry are of particular interest.  The total teaching load is six courses per year, including labs. Applicants must have at least a master’s degree in chemistry or a related field before the start of the appointment; a PhD and/or college level teaching experience are preferred.

One-Year Visiting Assistant Professor in Analytical Chemistry

Duties may include teaching lecture and laboratory classes in general chemistry, analytical chemistry, and chemistry for non STEM majors.  The total teaching load is five courses per year, including labs.  Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Chemistry or expect to have earned a Ph.D. by the start of employment.

Applications

Candidates for both positions will be evaluated based on the following application materials (pages are suggested length): a cover letter describing your interest and qualifications for the position (1-2 pages), a CV (2-5 pages), a teaching statement describing your teaching philosophy and how you would foster inclusivity and diversity in the classroom (1-2 pages), and (unofficial) copies of undergraduate and graduate transcripts.  Please include in your CV names and contact information for three people from whom letters of recommendation may be solicited later.  See here for additional information about the area, college, department, search process, and specific guidance for materials requested.  Review of applications begins immediately, and both positions will remain open until filled.  Inquiries may be directed to Jeffrey Myers, Chemistry Department Chair, [email protected].  Apply online .
