The Technical Works Group of the British High Commission is seeking to recruit an experienced Electrician, with a minimum of 2 years practical experience, to perform electrical repairs, installations and routine electrical maintenance work on the BHC property including the residence, main office building and other facilities.
Roles and responsibilities:
Maintenance Services (Preventive and Corrective)
- Domestic house re-wires and upgrades to UK specifications.
- Provision of UK 220V electrical systems and distribution board upgrades.
- Electrical fault finding and troubleshooting on domestic installations and appliances.
- Addition of electrical sockets and lighting in an office environment Health & Safety Tasks
Operational Support:
- Make recommendations regarding electrical works.
- Guide external electrical contractor to ensure compliance to BHC policies and standards.
Miscellaneous Duties:
- Proactively identify electrical maintenance needs and address them promptly.
- Contribute to team discussions on improving procedures and workflows.

The Electrician must have the necessary skills and experience to maintain the property and to follow a programme of gradual improvement and renewal, where applicable.
- A recognised Electrical Qualification to diploma/degree level or equivalent.
- Current and valid driver’s licence – ability to drive manual shift vehicles preferred.
- 2 -3 years’ work experience.
- Knowledge of UK standards of wiring (18th Edition).
- Good IT skills (particularly Microsoft Office applications).
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
Proven ability to work in a team. Candidate should also possess:
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Ability to work cohesively as part of a technical team.
- Good listening skills and ability to follow instructions.
- Be able to manage time-sensitive tasks/emergencies.

- Knowledge of HVAC and split air conditioning systems.
- Knowledge of generators.
- Knowledge of emergency lighting systems.
- Knowledge of UK test and inspection techniques.
- Knowledge of hydraulic systems.
- Knowledge of lightning protection systems.
- A good understanding of other building trades.
- Knowledge of Health & Safety practices.
- Experience in High Voltage would be an advantage.
- Basic construction skills highly desirable.
- Knowledge/experience in other disciplines would be an asset.
- Basic computer skills (windows).

Candidates must have the legal status to live and work in Jamaica at time of application.
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list. If during the reserve period of 6 months the same or largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second of subsequent candidate.
