The British Embassy Amman has a vacancy for Pro Consul, job grade Administrative Officer (AO) on a temporary contract until 1 October 2026
As Pro‑Consul in Amman, you will support the delivery of high‑quality consular services to British Nationals in Jordan in line with the Consular Strategy. The role encompasses the full range of consular work including providing consular assistance to vulnerable British Nationals, developing and maintaining contacts with local authorities and other relevant stakeholders in the community, and the provision of notarial and documentary services.
You will be supporting the full spectrum of consular policy on prevention, assistance, and the delivery of 24/7 professional services on a day‑to‑day basis, including complex and high‑profile cases (e.g., hospitalisations, domestic abuse, child welfare, detention).
You will also play an active role in crisis preparedness and response, working as part of the Embassy’s whole‑of‑mission approach to crisis management. This includes contributing to contingency planning, participating in crisis exercising, supporting crisis communication, and being ready to deploy in a consular crisis or assisted departure to assist with the protection and welfare of British Nationals.
You may be required to travel overseas for training and development, and there will be opportunities to provide consular or crisis cover for colleagues across the region.
Assistance
- Provide accurate advice and assistance to Distressed British Nationals and their families, including in cases of arrest/detention, hospitalisation, or other complex and sensitive situations.
- Support high‑priority and vulnerable cases in line with consular guidance.
- Possible out‑of‑hours requirement in an emergency or during crisis activation.
Counter and Notarial Services
- Administer the online consular appointment system.
- Provide a range of counter services including notarial services and Emergency Travel Documents (ETDs).
- Respond promptly and professionally to customer enquiries through all communication channels.
Communications and Stakeholder Engagement
- Assist with the delivery of prevention and communication campaigns, including contributing to messaging, events, and briefing materials for outreach activities.
- Actively seek out and manage partnerships with local authorities, community organisations, and other relevant stakeholders to support British Nationals and strengthen prevention work.
Crisis Preparedness and Response
- Participate in crisis exercising, and training as part of the Embassy’s whole‑of‑mission crisis preparedness approach.
- Support crisis response during activation, including assisting with consular casework, welfare enquiries, field deployments, or operational tasks as required.

Working hours and remuneration:
The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including a start pay of JOD 1,225 per month based on 37 hours per week.
Salary will be paid in gross, and you are expected to comply with your tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the local authorities. If exceptionally you are not liable to pay Jordanian tax, you will receive a net salary, which is minus the deduction of an equivalent level of local tax. Further information on this will be provided at interview if necessary.
This role is for a full-time, temporary employment until 1st October 2026. The successful candidate will be subject to a 90-days probationary period. The appointment is subject to satisfactory local and UK security clearances. The selected candidate must have the right to live and work in Jordan.
Normal working hours at the Embassy are Sundays to Wednesdays from 08:00-15:30 and Thursdays from 08:00-15:00. Hours of work vary for this role according to operational requirements in agreement with the line manager, and in line with FCDO and Embassy policies. This role offers diverse frontline consular experience, including prevention, crisis management, representation, and communications. You must handle multiple tasks under pressure, and rare serious incidents may require after-hours response.
