Main purpose of job:
As Post Security Manager, you will support the delivery of effective safety and security arrangements at the British Embassy Madrid and across the Spain Network. Working closely with the Post Security Officer and Regional Security Adviser, you will help mitigate risk, protect staff and assets, and ensure the organisation is well prepared for both routine operations and times of crisis.
What you will do?
You will take on a broad and varied role, including:
- Managing day‑to‑day security operations at the Embassy and associated residences, including oversight of the contracted guard force and security equipment.
- Providing practical security advice, managing and investigating incidents, and supporting the delivery of proportionate security measures for official events and visits.
- Playing an active role in crisis planning, emergency preparedness and regular security and evacuation exercises.
- Acting as Fire Safety Manager for the Spain Network, leading on fire safety compliance, training and audits.
- Issuing and managing access passes, maintaining access control systems, and ensuring appropriate procedures are followed.
- Building effective working relationships with internal colleagues, local authorities, law enforcement and external security partners.
- Line managing drivers and support staff, overseeing the embassy vehicle fleet, and managing related budgets responsibly.
- Supporting briefings and security training for new joiners, visitors, contractors and temporary staff.

Our Ideal Candidate shows:
- Full professional proficiency in English and Spanish, both written and spoken (minimum C1 level in line with the CEFR framework);
- Proven experience in security management, gained within a corporate, government, military or comparable environment;
- Knowledge of, or experience in, Health & Safety work practices, including fire safety and emergency procedures;
- Strong communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and professionally with staff, senior stakeholders and external partners, including law enforcement organisations;
- Strong problem‑solving skills, supported by sound judgement, discretion and the ability to deal with sensitive information diplomatically;
- High level of attention to detail and ability to manage multiple operational priorities effectively;
- Experience in budget management and responsible resource planning.

Nice to have:
- Experience of working within a Five Eyes (FVEY) environment or similar international security context;
- Experience in crisis response and supporting organisations during incidents or emergency situations;
- Holding a professional security or management qualification, such as those awarded by the Security Institute, ASIS, or an equivalent recognised body;
- Knowledge of, or qualifications related to,“Prevención de Riesgos Laborales” (occupational risk prevention / health and safety in Spain).

This is a full-time, permanent contract at EO-EE level, based in Madrid.
The successful candidate is subject to a confirmation of a background check, security clearance and the successful completion of a probationary period.
The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Spanish Social Security Scheme and will therefore not be entitled to any gratuity from the Embassy based on gross annual salary.
The Embassy is a Diplomatic Mission with tax exempt status and does not collect taxes for other States. Employees are fully responsible for payment of income tax at the legally required rate. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Spain are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Spanish employment law.
Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Spain and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
Working patterns: Normal working hours are 37.5 per week: 8.00am to 16:00pm from Monday to Friday.
Learning & Development: We offer time and financial support for the successful candidate to take advantage of professional learning and development opportunities inside and outside of the organisation. All new hires undertake a workplace induction and there are a number of mandatory e-learning courses that must be completed in order to pass probation.
