The Yemen Office Network (YON) at the British Embassy Riyadh has a vacancy for Communications Officer on a fixed-term contract of one (1) year, with a possibility of renewal.

The jobholder will provide support across a range of YON priorities, but will lead on delivering the Embassy’s communications, engagement with Chevening Scholars and the annual recruitment process, and supporting Embassy operations. 

 

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Monitoring of Yemeni, Saudi, and regional media related to Yemen to provide regular media reporting on political, military, economic, and humanitarian issues in Yemen.
  • Assist with delivering the YON communication strategy, developing bespoke products in Arabic and English, interacting with journalists, and advising on wider UK communication activity.
  • Run the Yemen Office Network and the Ambassador’s social media accounts and responsible for developing new ideas on how to deliver engaging and effective messaging. Work closely with regional journalists, colleagues in the Communications Directorate, and Arabic Media Hub to deliver this.
  • Lead on the Chevening Scholarship programme for the Embassy, including the interview/ sifting process and engagement with alumni.
  • Interpret at meetings between Yemen Office colleagues and Arabic-speaking interlocutors and ad hoc translation of documents.
  • Develop a personal network to provide insights on going developments and inform the Embassy’s political activity.
  • Be prepared to support with the Ambassador’s Chief of Staff to deliver wider Embassy management, including event and visit organisation.

The above list is not exhaustive, and the jobholder will be required to be flexible as specific responsibilities could change in the future and this would be at the discretion of the line manager and Senior Management. The job description may be reviewed to meet changes in business needs. The jobholder may also take on other ad hoc tasks as required, including participating in the Embassy’s emergency planning and any other response to a crisis.

Eligibility:

The position is available to Saudi nationals and to current holders of valid Saudi residence permits or transferable iqama. The successful candidate will be required to transfer their sponsorship to the British Embassy.

  • Confident and clear communicator, and fluent in English and Arabic. Able to express ideas and messages clearly and concisely, both verbally and in written communication. Confidence in translating meetings and documents between Arabic and English.
  • Relevant work experience in communications and media, including creating engaging content and using digital and social media.
  • An in-depth understanding of Yemeni politics and society.
  • Strong planning, organisational, and time management skills. Ability to work independently, prioritise flexibly, and use own initiative to deliver to tight deadlines and juggle competing demands.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with contacts and colleagues.
  • Excellent customer focus and responsive to customer needs and able to treat others with respect and courtesy regardless of work pressures.
  • Strong IT skills and literacy in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook).

  • Holds at least a bachelor’s degree a related field.
  • Understanding of the Yemeni dialect.
  • Familiarity with the Chevening Scholarship programme.

The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role.

Monthly salary details:

  • Base Salary – SAR 9,256
  • Housing Allowance – SAR 2,314 (subject to eligibility)*
  • Travel Allowance – SAR 500 (subject to eligibility)*
  • Total – SAR 12,070

*Allowances are not payable to staff who receive official provision for such expenditure in some other form. Spouses/ Dependents of UKBS officers working at the Embassy are not eligible to Housing or Travel Allowance.

No accommodation nor relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.

This position is full-time, based on 35 hours per week. Normal working hours for the Embassy are from 08:00 to 15:00 from Sunday to Thursday, with core working hours from 10:00-15:00. Core working hours is the period of the day that employees are required to be at work. The working day outside of the core hours is a flexible period, which allows employees to choose when they work, subject to operational needs.

The jobholder will be required to be flexible in their approach to hours worked as these will be dictated by operational needs and may involve working out of hours (evening and weekend), especially during visits and events. Flexible working arrangements may be considered based on operational requirements and agreement with the line manager, and in line with FCDO and Embassy policies.

There may also be a requirement to travel around the region (and possibly further afield) to attend meetings/ conferences and for training purposes. At present, there is only very limited travel to Yemen, but this may change. Any travel to Yemen will be subject to strict UK Government guidance and will be considered in close cooperation with the jobholder. Training on Security Awareness in Fragile Environments (SAFE/ SAFE+) will be required for any travel to Yemen.

The successful candidate will be subject to a 90-day probationary period.

The successful candidate will be required to transfer their iqama under the Embassy’s sponsorship.

The start date mentioned in the advert is a tentative start date and the successful candidate will be required to undergo security-vetting procedures. Any offer of employment will be subject to the candidate achieving suitable clearances and reference checks.

The security clearance process includes checks available in country and in the UK, dependant on the security level required for the role and the candidate’s profile and UK footprint.
