The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) Mexico team works for UK businesses and serves as a frontline response to connect companies with business leads in the country, with the core aim to help UK firms win and expand their business in Mexico and the region.

The position will report directly to the Head of Head of the Security, Defence and Aerospace, Digital Tech and Mining sectors Team, at the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) for Latin America in Mexico, based in Mexico City. It will be a full-time position starting in December 2024, subject to receipt of a successful security clearance with a 3 months’ probation and subject to review an open-ended contract. 

The position will mainly assist British commercial interests in the Security, Defence, Aerospace and Mining sectors in Mexico. The main role is to contribute towards the sectors’ strategy and support British companies in Mexico delivering value towards the negotiations of the UK-MX Free Trade Agreement.

Roles and responsibilities: 

  • Manage initial enquiries sent from the DBT LATAC IMT Team. Adopting an effective, standardised relationship management approach for UK businesses.
  • Work colleagues in the Security, Defence and Aerospace sectors and in-country DBT Mexico and FCDO colleagues – you will be responsible for various defined tasks in support of UK companies currently in market or looking to enter the market; helping them identify opportunities, and help them navigate the challenges.
  • Update regularly the Security, Defence, Aerospace and Mining core scripts, data bases, sector reports and internal targets files.
  • Be an advocate for the Security, Defence, Aerospace and Mining sectors, supporting the team in organising events, follow up with clients, helping secure sponsorship opportunities and be present at events.
  • Work and support companies with market research and develop tools for companies looking to enter the Mexican and LATAC Markets for the Security, Defence, Aerospace and Mining.
  • Work as a flexible member of the Mission to support wider Embassy work as needed, including but not limited to, Crisis Work and other HMG work and activities.
  • Be an active member of the regional DBTLATAC team.
  • Assist the team on commercial missions, visits and events planned throughout the financial year.
  • Ability to travel both national or international.

Essential on arrival:

  • Undergraduate degree International Business, International Relations, Marketing or Business Administration.
  • At least one years’ experience working in a sales or customer-facing role and/or in the trade and investment promotion environment or related fields.
  • Experience of customer relationship management and use of CRM systems.
  • Proven track record of cross-team collaboration and working with teams across geographies.
  • A positive, resilient, able to work under a fast changing environment, being able to solve problems with minimum supervision required.
  • Well organised, results driven person that is self-motivated to achieve individual and team progress.
  • Appropriate communication techniques in a timely and responsive manner
  • Market research skills
  • Proactiveness
  • Experience working with budgets and finances

Language requirements:

Language: Spanish and English

Level of language required: Advanced

Desirable:  

  • Being able to delivering multiple tasks and projects with little supervision. A knowledge of business practices in Mexico
  • Basic knowledge of exports/imports.
  • Experience of working in or with government departments, NGOs, and similar institutions.
  • Basic knowledge of the Security, Defence, Aerospace and Mining sectors.

Working patterns:

Flexible/hybrid working can be considered for the right candidate, but please note you may be expected to travel to other cities in/across Mexico and to the UK. It is expected to be at the office for a minimum of four days a week, working for 38 hours per week. Candidate is expected to attend events outside of working hours when needed. 

Candidates must be able to live and work in Mexico in their own right.

The successful candidate will be subject to a security clearance and professional reference checks.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.  

Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’.  If during the reserve period of 12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
