Volunteer Opportunity: Bingham Creek Adult Salmon Weir

We’re seeking motivated volunteers to assist with salmon monitoring at the Bingham Creek Adult Salmon Weir. Volunteers will work alongside biologists to help with fish identification, data collection, and weir operations as adult salmon return to spawn.

Duties:

• Checking Bingham Creek weir; identifying, sampling and enumerating salmon before passing them upstream.
• Observing, counting, and accurately identifying all salmon species (Coho, Chinook, Chum) and by sex and age.
• Scanning Coho for CWT (coded-wire tags) and sampling CWT snouts.
• Scanning and recording Steelhead for PIT tag (Passive Integrated Transponder).
• Collecting scale samples from wild Coho and Steelhead.
• Sacrificing and recording number of hatchery fish by sex and species.
• Accurately record data on datasheets and scale cards.

Work Conditions:

The work is conducted primarily outside in the field in all weather conditions. May sometimes work in cold water for hours at a time; heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs. unassisted).  This position may involve working in or near water, including tasks that require navigating, negotiating, and performing duties related to water environments.

Misc:

This volunteer opportunity will require several trainings prior to being in the field; PFD, Swift Water Awareness, Garmin, etc. Trainings will take approximately an hour in a half to complete in total.
