ESWET is the European association of Waste-to-Energy technology suppliers and represents 38 companies involved in this field. Waste-to-Energy is an essential part of a sustainable waste management strategy as it treats non-recyclable waste that would otherwise be landfilled. ESWET’s aim is to promote the role of Waste-to-Energy in terms of sustainable waste management, reliable energy, and pollution prevention.
Please note that the Secretariat of ESWET, which includes this position, is run by CLERENS. Accordingly, while the Technical Officer will support the work of the public affairs team for ESWET, you will be hired by CLERENS.
CLERENS is a leading public affairs and communications consultancy based in Brussels, specialised in advocacy, political and regulatory risk assessment, public funding and strategic communications. CLERENS consultants have an in-depth expertise in energy, environment, climate and mobility.
Main Duties:
The Technical Officer will work in close collaboration with the ESWET policy and communications team. The role includes a broad range of responsibilities to strengthen ESWET’s expertise and activities in the areas of emissions monitoring, energy efficiency, pollutants monitoring.
The main responsibilities include:
- Keeping up to date with the latest research covering Waste-to-Energy technologies and waste management, providing advice and expertise to the policy and communications teams to support the association’s advocacy activities;
- Developing the association’s technical knowledge: collecting data & insights, responding to ad-hoc requests from policymakers and members; supporting the work of the policy team on specific EU files such as the Industrial Emissions Directive, Regulations on Persistent Organic Pollutants and chemicals, Carbon Removals, Emissions Trading System;
- Drafting research papers, white papers, presentations, reports and, possibly, market analysis papers;
- Supporting the work of the internal Working Groups related to Carbon capture, utilisation and storage; Waste-to-Hydrogen and Fuels; incineration residues and bottom ashes; and our Technical Committee.
- Representing ESWET at workshops, conferences, and networking events, liaising with external stakeholders.
Requirements and competencies:
- Technical background, with a university degree in a relevant field.
- 2 to 5 years of experience in the energy sector, with prior experience in the Waste-to-Energy field or waste manaqement;
- Passionate about environmental topics, strong research skills, and ability to easily understand and communicate about complex technical issues;
- Ability to take initiative, work independently, and plan to meet challenging deadlines;
- Fluency in English is necessary; additional languages are an asset;
- Strong writing and oral presentation skills;
- Ability to learn quickly and work on a wide range of issues;
- Ability to work in a close-knit team and flexibility.
