WY Statewide Bat Acoustic Monitoring Technician

Description:  The Wyoming Natural Diversity Database is hiring two technicians to conduct fall bat acoustic surveys on public lands across the state of Wyoming.  Monitoring at these sites will follow similar protocols to the North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat) but will take place during fall migration. The technician will work independently placing acoustic monitoring equipment to record bats at pre-defined locations.

The job will involve extensive driving and navigating in rugged and remote region with a very low population base. Self-reliance and problem-solving is a must. Work will involve placing acoustic detectors, managing data uploads, and troubleshooting during days, late evenings/nights, and weekends. Attention to detail, time management skills, and understanding or willingness to learn and adhere to NABat protocols are a must. Experience operating both Pettersson D500x and Songmeter detectors is desired although not required. Although the position is based out of the University of Wyoming in Laramie, Wyoming, the technician will spend the majority of their time traveling across the state with a provided vehicle. Car camping will be required for the majority of the work, with hotel or bunkhouse accommodations on weekends. Technicians must be capable of driving long distances between field sites, working safely in bear country (including grizzly bear habitat), and working solo in fairly remote locations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Deploying acoustic monitoring equipment.
  • Strict adherence to the NABat protocol.
  • Coordinating with private landowners, and state and federal land management agency personnel.
  • Safely and efficiently navigate to survey locations.
  • Comfort operating independently and camping solo for weeks at a time

Qualifications: Experience with the deployment of Pettersson and Wildlife Acoustics acoustic monitoring equipment OR ability and willingness to learn is required. The most important qualification for this position is the ability to navigate backcountry roads, work, and camp independently in remote and challenging field conditions, frequently without cell service. The successful applicant must also display the ability to independently complete a logistically complex project and the ability to communicate effectively with land managers across the region. A valid US driver’s license and a strong work ethic are also required. Please address all of these qualifications as well as your dates of availability in your cover letter.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to independently complete a logistically complex project
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with state and federal employees, conservation officers, and other collaborators.
  • A valid US driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle following University of Wyoming regulations.

Desired Qualifications:

Experience with the deployment of Songmeter or other acoustic monitoring equipment or ability and willingness to learn

Pay: $20—$24/hourly DOE+ per diem while conducting field work (work vehicle provided)
