The British Embassy in Israel is part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and has an exciting opportunity for a Consular Officer under the Consular Team.
Looking to make a difference? Looking for a job with impact? Join the Consular team at the British Embassy in Tel Aviv.
We have an exciting hybrid job opportunity, supporting the delivery of high-quality consular services to British nationals in Israel.
The Consular team is part of a global FCDO (Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office) network, delivering assistance, crisis response and prevention work. In Tel Aviv, the team supports a large and diverse British population, as well as a high volume of visitors, within a complex and fast-moving operating environment.
The Consular Officer role covers the full spectrum of consular work, including managing both routine and complex casework (e.g. hospitalizations, deaths, detentions, and safeguarding), assisting vulnerable British nationals, and maintaining strong working relationships with local authorities, hospitals, foreign missions, NGOs and other key stakeholders.
In addition, the role covers key administrative functions, including issuing Emergency Travel Documents, providing notarial services, and supporting day-to-day consular administration.
The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of consular priorities across assistance, prevention, and crisis response, including supporting contingency planning, participating in crisis exercises, and being ready to deploy in response to crises or emergency situations.
Consular work in Israel can be high-profile, fast-paced, and sometimes emotionally challenging. The role therefore requires sound judgment, resilience, discretion, and the ability to operate effectively under pressure while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and service delivery.
Emotional support is provided by the FCDO to Consular staff on a regular basis.
Duties and responsibilities:

- Manage a varied consular caseload, including hospitalizations, welfare cases, detentions and bereavements, ensuring cases are handled with care, discretion and sound judgement.
- Respond to enquiries by phone, email and in-person, providing clear information and a consistently high standard of customer service.
- Deliver practical consular services, including Emergency Travel Documents and notarial services, accurately and in line with guidance.
Stakeholder engagement
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with local authorities, hospitals, NGOs, other foreign missions and key external partners.
Crisis and prevention
- Contribute to crisis preparedness and response, including contingency planning, crisis exercises and real-time support during incidents, including occasional out-of-hours work.
- Identify trends and emerging issues affecting British nationals in Israel, using insights to support prevention activity and improve service delivery.
Team and administrative support
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date guidance, processes, records and lists.
- Support the smooth day-to-day administration of the Consular Section.
- Provide flexible support to the wider team, including covering for the Vice Consul when required.
- Contribute actively to a supportive, inclusive and collaborative team culture.
