Home Ignition Zone Evaluator

The Resource Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains is looking to add additional staff to help support Home Ignition Zone evaluations in the greater Los Angeles area. The Home Ignition Zone evaluators play an integral role in supporting the district’s fire resiliency programs by conducting evaluations with homeowners and assisting with community outreach and education. This position is an opportunity to support our local communities in a part time capacity.

Job Description: 

Under the supervision of the Community Resilience Project Manager the Home Ignition Zone Evaluator is responsible for conducting evaluations on residential properties throughout the District’s sphere of influence. This position  plays a key role in educating the community and helping residents prepare their homes and landscapes for wildfire. This position will also be directed by the Director of Community Resilience and the Wildfire Resilience Specialist. 

Job Duties: 

• Conduct HIZ evaluations, create reports, and provide the results to clients.
• May attend meetings and give presentations to community organizations, homeowners associations (HOA), neighborhood councils and others to promote the RCD’s wildfire programs and services.
• As directed by supervisors, assist with outreach and tabling events in diverse communities and specific geographical regions within the RCD’s  sphere of influence which includes communicating with residents, groups, communities, organizations, elected officials, agencies and others to encourage participation in Home Ignition Zone (HIZ) evaluations and other programs.
• May attend National Fire Protection Association, California Fire, and similar wildfire training and program awareness opportunities as directed by supervisors.
• Complete other tasks as directed by the Community Resilience Project Manager or Wildfire Resilience Specialist.

Desired Qualifications:

• Prior experience working in wildfire resilience-related programs preferred.
• Strong communication and public speaking skills.
• Public education, teaching, and/or interpretive experience.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Suite programs.
• Strong technical writing and communication skills.
• Background or coursework in environmental science, conservation, or ecology a plus
• Flexible to work on an as-needed basis (nights, weekends) in addition to scheduled projects.

Work Environment:

• This position is primarily field based with minimal in office work.
• This position will require some nights and weekends.
• This position will be regularly required to stand, stoop, kneel, bend, crouch and lift up to 25 pounds.
