The University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, Department of Neurosurgery, and the Human Brain Research Laboratory invites applicants for a Research Assistant Professor position.  The primary appointment of the faculty member will be in the Department of Neurosurgery.  Successful applicants will be expected to establish and maintain an extramurally funded research program and to participate in teaching activities in and around the Department. This position will also provide the critical skills and programatic leadership that will greatly enhance our department’s research mission.

The UI Department of Neurosurgery is made up of more than 13 full-time faculty members who provide national and international leadership across a range of neurological surgery specialties including but not limited to, brain tumor neurosurgery, endovascular neurosurgery, functional neurosurgery, pediatric neurosurgery, spinal surgery, and neurotrauma neurosurgery. The Department of Neurosurgery has a long tradition of excellence in research, a well-developed research infrastructure, and ample patient populations that support efforts in a variety of areas of investigation.

Education Requirement:
  • Ph.D. and/or MD/DO degree is required.
Required Qualifications:
  • Completed research training in various phases of Neurosurgery
  • Experience in conducting novel combinations of invasive and non-invasive methods that are unique to the Human Brain Research Laboratory and carried out in neurosurgery patient-subjects
  • Must demonstrate the ability to mentor and teach graduate level students.
  • Must demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Must possess a strong commitment to academic and clinical excellence
  • Must possess a strong interest in clinical education
  • Eligible for a medical license in the State of Iowa
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience with collection, analysis, and interpretation of human single neuron and local field potential data
  • Experience in preparing specialized hybrid research electrodes for implantation within a sterile environment of the operating room
  • Experience performing research studies with epilepsy patients and collaborating with clinical staff
  • Expertise in human auditory neurophysiology, with a track record of publications in auditory neuroscience and research funding
  • Demonstrated experience promoting an inclusive culture in the workforce and academic environment.
