Main purpose of job:

The British High Commission in South Africa works to maintain and strengthen the UK’s relationship with South Africa. The UK and South Africa work together bilaterally, regionally and internationally on shared priorities including climate change, gender equality, security, trade and inclusive economic growth.

This is an exciting opportunity for a digitally savvy, creative and proactive communications professional to join the UK in South Africa Communications Team. The jobholder will help tell the story of the UK’s partnership with South Africa across a wide range of issues, including economic growth, global health, science and technology, gender equality, green energy and consular support, while also showcasing the strength of UK–South Africa people-to-people links across arts, sport and culture.

The role is based at the British Consulate in Cape Town and forms part of the wider UK in South Africa Communications Team, led from the British High Commission in Pretoria. The successful candidate will need the professionalism and confidence to work directly with internal stakeholders, senior colleagues, external partners, journalists and high-profile visitors.

The jobholder will be responsible for developing and delivering high-quality communications products to support UK in South Africa objectives. This will include capturing compelling content at events and on field visits, gathering case studies, drafting communication plans, supporting media engagement, producing digital content for social media channels, and monitoring coverage to keep colleagues informed of the media landscape.

The successful candidate will have excellent attention to detail, strong writing skills, sound news judgement and the ability to produce accurate, engaging content at pace. They will be a positive self-starter with initiative and drive, able to build strong relationships with media and influencer contacts, while working collaboratively with colleagues to deliver communications support from concept to execution.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Work with colleagues across the British High Commission in Pretoria and the British Consulate in Cape Town to translate policy priorities and campaign objectives into engaging communications products for digital and media audiences.
  • Develop social media copy and content that increases the profile, reach and impact of UK in South Africa activity.
  • Capture high-quality photography and video content at events, visits and project sites for use across digital channels.
  • Identify and develop strong human stories and case studies from UK-supported programmes and partnerships, including by conducting interviews with delivery partners and beneficiaries.
  • Design and produce multimedia content for social media platforms, including short-form video, graphics and other digital assets.
  • Support the planning and delivery of communications strategies and campaign activity for ministerial visits, events and wider policy priorities.
  • Build and sustain relationships with local journalists, partner organisations, content creators and influencers in support of communications objectives.
  • Draft press releases, media lines and other communications materials for external audiences.
  • Monitor news and media coverage relevant to UK in South Africa priorities and produce media summaries or reports for internal stakeholders.
  • Monitor and manage the media inbox, responding to press enquiries in a timely and professional manner and escalating where necessary.
  • Maintain and regularly update media and stakeholder contact databases.
  • Support posting and community management across social media channels when required.
  • Evaluate communications activity by reporting on media coverage, digital performance and audience engagement.

  • Experience in media, journalism, communications or a related field
  • Ability to learn quickly and work with a high degree of autonomy
  • Practical skills in photography, videography, social media content production and graphic design
  • Experience designing and delivering both proactive and reactive digital communications campaigns across a range of channels
  • Excellent written and spoken English, with the ability to draft accurate, engaging content for social media and other digital platforms, with strong editorial judgement and exceptional attention to detail
  • Experience using social media monitoring, insight and evaluation tools, with the ability to assess impact and use findings to improve future communications activity
  • Strong understanding of social media trends, audiences and channels, and how to tailor content accordingly
  • Ability to generate insights on target audiences, influencers and the media landscape to inform campaign strategy
  • Good understanding of the South African media, PR and communications environment
  • Excellent organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver to tight deadlines
  • Strong teamworking skills, with a proactive and solutions-focused approach, and the ability to remain effective under pressure and at short notice

  • Digital communications training through the FCDO Communications Directorate in London

The British High Commission pays in full for the Key Care Plus option on Discovery Health for staff including their spouses/partners and dependants.

  • After successful completion of probation the British High Commission will contribute 9% of your monthly salary to a Provident Fund.
  • Annual leave entitlement of 25 days
  • Working hours per week of 36.5
