Main purpose of job:

The British Office Sudan (BOS) is recruiting a Political Officer based in Port Sudan, with possible relocation to Khartoum in the future.

The purpose of the role is to provide high-quality analysis, reporting and advice, build a strong stakeholder network and support effective senior engagement. and support

Roles and responsibilities: 

• Context Monitoring and Analysis: Lead ongoing political analysis to support situational awareness and informed planning.
• Stakeholder Engagement: Develop and maintain a broad network of contacts across local, regional and international stakeholders to gather insights and support effective engagement.
• Advisory Support: Provide clear, well-evidenced briefings and advice to colleagues to support decision-making and programme delivery.
• Reporting and Information Management: Produce accurate, timely reporting on key developments and emerging trends to ensure a consistent and up-to-date understanding of the context.
• Support to Senior Engagements: Contribute to the delivery of senior-level engagements, including preparing briefings, facilitating meetings and supporting outreach activity.
• Cross-Team Collaboration: Work closely with colleagues across political, humanitarian and development teams to ensure coordinated and coherent delivery of objectives.
• Flexible Delivery in a Dynamic Environment: Operate effectively in a fast-moving context, adapting to changing priorities and supporting response efforts as required.
• Events and Visits Coordination: Support the planning and delivery of official visits and events, including logistical arrangements and coordination with relevant stakeholders.

• Demonstrable understanding of Sudan’s operating environment, including its history, culture, media landscape and current context.
• Experience working in contexts affected by conflict, fragility or humanitarian crises.
• Experience of operating in, or preparing for, fast-moving or high-pressure environments.
• Strong analytical and research skills, with the ability to assess complex information and identify key trends and risks.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present information clearly and concisely in English and Arabic.
• Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships across a wide range of stakeholders.
• Sound judgement and the ability to approach sensitive issues with objectivity and discretion.
• Demonstrated ability to remain effective under pressure, showing flexibility, resilience and adaptability.
• Proactive and well-organised, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver to tight deadlines.
• Able to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaboratively within geographically dispersed teams.
  Qualifications
• A relevant degree in political science, international relations, law, public administration, or a related field.
