The British Embassy Amman has a vacancy for a Chevening and Political Support Officer on a fixed-term contract for 2 years (renewable).
This is a key role in the Political & Governance team administering the FCDO’s Chevening Scholarship scheme and assisting the team to deliver on the UK-Jordan bilateral relationship.
A central pillar of the position is the delivery of the UK’s flagship Chevening scholarship programme in Jordan. The officer is responsible for supporting the full lifecycle of the programme – from outreach and candidate engagement through to selection and stakeholder liaison, ensuring that it attracts outstanding individuals who will go on to become future leaders and advocates for the UK. This work directly contributes to strengthening long-term bilateral relationships and enhancing the UK’s soft power in the region.
Alongside this, the officer provides essential logistical, administrative, and coordination support to the Political & Governance team’s wider portfolio. This includes admin and logistics support for high-level visits, supporting events and policy engagements, translation and interpreting at events for senior colleagues, and helping the team to operate efficiently and professionally in a fast-paced diplomatic environment.
Duties and responsibilities:
Scholar Recruitment
- Administration of the Chevening Application process, including downloading applications, assisting with shortlisting, arranging and supporting interviews, updating the Chevening online application system with short-lists and interview results and organising predeparture briefings.
- Liaising with the UK Chevening Secretariat to coordinate the application and selection process.
- Organising timetables and management of Chevening interview panels.
Programme Outreach and Marketing
- Generate social media and press content according to the Chevening branding guidelines.
- Administer The Scholarship Unit’s (TSU) marketing budget and making use of marketing materials from the Chevening Secretariat.
- Proactively identifying new ways to promote Chevening, such as attending university fairs and other outreach events.
- Collaborate with local partners and alumni to amplify promotional activities and expand engagement opportunities.
Programme Administration
- Meet deadlines and requests from TSU and the Chevening Secretariat as set annually in the Chevening Policy Manual, including completing the annual delivery, marketing, and alumni engagement plans.
- Carrying out day-to-day administration and delivery of the programme in line with Chevening policy as set by TSU.
- Responding to requests for information or insight from TSU or the Secretariat.
- Maintaining positive relationships with applicants and award recipients before, during and after their award.
- Actively contribute to continuous improvement by upskilling and sharing best practices with other Posts through the global chat, newsletters, or drop-in calls.
Logistics
- Support logistics for Political Team activities, including meetings, official engagements, and externally hosted events;
- Support the organisation of high-level visits, including visit programme logistics and briefing packs;
- Maintain accurate records and contact lists, provide translation and draft routine correspondence;
- Support the development of partnerships for Chevening, working with the Soft Power lead to manage partners and ensure timely payments.
- Provide ad-hoc support for political reporting and engagements.

Working Hours and Remuneration
The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including a starting pay of 1225 JOD per month based on 37 hours per week.
Salary will be paid in gross, and you are expected to comply with your tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the local authorities. If exceptionally you are not liable to pay Jordanian tax, you will receive a net salary, which is minus the deduction of an equivalent level of local tax. Further information on this will be provided at interview if necessary.
This role is for a full-time employment on a fixed term contract basis for two years. The successful candidate will be subject to a 90 probationary period. The appointment is subject to satisfactory local and UK security clearances. The selected candidate must have the right to live and work in Jordan.
Normal working hours at the Embassy are Sundays to Wednesdays from 08:00-15:30 and Thursdays from 08:00-15:00. The Embassy operates a flexible working policy that allows staff to work different hours as well as allowing staff to work from home one day a week, based on operational requirements and agreement with the line manager, and in line with FCDO and Embassy policies.
The package includes a good level of health insurance and a friendly, English-speaking work environment. We offer opportunities to develop professional skills through our Learning & Development offer. Leave entitlement is 25 days (on pro rata basis) plus 14 public holidays.
